man: ascii85   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The command ascii85 is one of several data encodings provided by the package trf.
This encoding transforms every block of four bytes into the Ascii85 representation as defined in the 'Postscript Reference Manual' (2nd Edition, section 3.13, page 129).
It should be noted that this ability to immediately read from and/or write to a channel is an historic artifact which was introduced at the beginning of Trf's life when Tcl version 7.6 was current as this and earlier versions have trouble to deal with \0 characters embedded into either input or out- put.

[magick-users] PostScript level 2 support   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Raster image data may be stored as binary, hex, or ascii85 encoded blobs inside a postscript file.
The trick may be to select a compression scheme and postscript level at which imageMagick does not create binary files, but uses either hex or ascii85 compression.
It always creates ascii85 encoded postscript files exactly because of these reasons.

Import: include and place common file types in direct PostScript
The inlining needs no format conversion beyond perhaps ASCII85 armoring, which is nothing but a PostScript one-liner that can be run in the previewer and requires no other program, regardless of the type of the imported file.
ASCII85 is a completely reversible transformation from which the exact original file can be recreated at any time, again with a simple line of PostScript.
To write or maintain such code by hand is tedious and error-prone: you could not just replace the ASCII85'd image data with an updated version after cropping or resizing the file, without the risk of forgetting to update some of the copies of its dimensions.

 Systems Labs: Adobe Photoshop
Users who are interested in raising their quota limit should speak to a consultant.
Photoshop CS2, which is installed in the labs, defaults to the ASCII85 encoding method and does not require you to make changes before sending a job to the printer.
Failure to use the right encoding method may result in the loss of money from your account, extended time to print for all users, jammed printers, error messages, and pages of gibberish or no printed pages at all.

I just felt this was an interesting problem and had a look at it.

Since we only have a partial block, we should add 5-n zeros, where n is the number of bytes in the partial block.

 Choosing a print encoding method
ASCII85 is a text encoding for binary data that is more compact than ASCII encoding.
Some print spooler programs, computer networks, and third-party printer drivers don't support files that are binary or JPEG-encoded, and some PostScript output devices accept binary and JPEG-encoded image data only through their AppleTalk and Ethernet ports, not their parallel or serial ports.
However, ASCII85 files contain about twice as many characters and require about twice as much time to transfer as binary files.

it was created by first ASCII85 encoding it and then compressing it).
If the stream is ASCII85 encoded at some point it should happen after the compression so that the PDF contains only ASCII data.
