ASLEF has continually expressed its deep concern over the fragmentation of the London Underground by dividing the operations of the trains and stations from the core of the Underground — the track, signalling, bridges, tunnels, lifts escalators, stations and train maintenance.
ASLEF takes the view that as the London Underground is publicly owned, and it is the public that indirectly pays for the system, the public should have access to the maximum amount of information in order to pass any acceptable judgement on contracts.
ASLEF argues that the PPP structure may allow for a "fudging" of responsibilities and the fear of a "two-tier workforce" — that is, where PPPs lead to new employees being offered less generous terms and conditions that those workers who were originally transferred from the public sector.

Train drivers union Aslef has called off the threat of a rail strike on Monday after urgent talks were held today.
Aslef had been threating to disrupt services in a major row over rail safety, claiming that thousands of drivers would refuse to drive trains through areas covered by a contentious communications system.
Aslef said that "utter chaos" would be caused by the action, which would involve trains operated by Virgin, West Coast, Silverlink, Central Trains and Southern Trains, amongst others.

The move comes at the same time as ASLEF is balloting its members at Central Trains on strike action in support of two drivers who have had their grade reduced as a consequence of safety issues.
The current agreement with ASLEF expires on 31st December, with a new agreement due to come into operation from 1st January.
