  RAF - ASRAAM
The AIM-132 ASRAAM is a high speed, highly manoeuvrable, heat-seeking, air-to-air missile.
Although ASRAAM is predominantly intended for use in the within-visual-range (WVR) arena, it also has capabilities that permit its use in the beyond-visual-range arena.
In a typical WVR engagement, the ASRAAM is slaved to the target either visually or by the launch aircraft's onboard sensors.

ASRAAM was developed from the earlier SRAAM project in partnership, originally with the USA.
Such was the maneuverability of Taildog and SRAAM that one round is said to have almost collided with the Hunter launch aircraft during trials.
ASRAAM is finally entering service with the RAF in 2002 after more than 25 years development, having lost the TVC and is now pylon launched.

Matra-BAe AIM-132 ASRAAM ASRAAM - The RAAF's New WVR AAM
Since the ASRAAM achieves high accuracy, it is in effect a "hittile" and therefore arguably the warhead serves the purpose of guaranteeing the otherwise almost certain kill produced by a hit with a high velocity missile airframe.
The ASRAAM is designed to enable the early engagement of opposing fighter aircraft, and this is reflected in the missile's combination of highly sensitive FPA seeker, midcourse inertial package and high energy motor.
Therefore the ASRAAM is built to enable a defending fighter to break up opposing fighter escorts in the premerge, to provide the defending fighter with an early opportunity to engage the escorted bomber package.

ASRAAM is a scale kit by The Launch Pad that models a prototype of a thrust-vectored air-to-air missile.
In fact, ASRAAM is not only exceptionally stable in flight, but is an excellent, easy-building sport flyer, and a good choice for a first cluster model (it uses a pair of 24mm motors).
ASRAAM wallowed on its side momentarily, and descended in a slow flat spin, with chute ejection at a good 150' off the ground.

The fundamental design brief for ASRAAM is one of high speed, high agility, extended range and improved target acquisition.
Indeed it is even possible for the software to designate individual areas of the aircraft, engines, cockpit, wing, etc. Such a capability should vastly improve the weapons ability to counter simple infra red counter measures, such as flares or similar pyrotechnics.
In addition the UK is considering fitting ASRAAM in place of AIM-9 aboard the RAF's fleet of Tornado GR.4 aircraft (reducing the number of types of missile in RAF service).

 AIM-132 ASRAAM
ASRAAM was initiated in the 1980's by Germany and the United Kingdom, but the two countries were unable to agree on the details of the joint-venture.
Germany left the ASRAAM project in the early 1990s, and in the spring of 1995 initiated an improved version of the Sidewinder, the IRIS-T (Infra Red Imagery Sidewinder-Tail controlled) built by Bodensee Geraetetechnik GmBH (BGT).
The resulting assessment was that the ASRAAM (as is) could not meet the AIM-9X operational requirements in high off-boresight angle performance, infrared counter-countermeasures robustness, lethality, and interoperability.

ASRAAM provides a pilot with the ability to effectively engage targets from gun range to near Beyond Visual Range.
ASRAAM's maximum range is uncontested, and no other short-range air-to-air missile comes near to this capability, providing the ability to passively home beyond the limits of visual range and well into the realm traditionally thought of as Beyond Visual Range.

The ASRAAM is armed with a 10 kg (22 lb) blast-fragmentation warhead, which is triggered by a combined laser proximity/impact fuzing system.
While the RAF had still rejected full-scale procurement of ASRAAM in 2001 because it was not meeting performance goals in some key areas, these problems have apparently been solved, and ASRAAM was finally declared ready for operational use with the RAF in September 2002.

 AIM-132 ASRAAM
In the 1980s, NATO countries had an agreement that the USA would develop a medium-range air-to-air missile (the AIM-120 AMRAAM) to replace the AIM-7 Sparrow, and Britain and Germany would develop a short-range air-to-air missile (the ASRAAM) to replace the AIM-9 Sidewinder.
After numerous development delays with ASRAAM, the USA later changed its mind and developed an improved Sidewinder, the AIM-9X.
Germany left the ASRAAM project in the early 1990s, and in the spring of 1995 initiated an improved version of the Sidewinder, the IRIS-T.

ASRAAM development was grossly behind schedule and the missile being developed was grossly inferior to the R-73.
So unless Asraam is full of software bugs or has some sort of inherent conceptual flaw in the software that has not been made public, it is the best IR short range missile on the market and if it is not now, it will be after the "block II" upgrade program.

If dealing with hostile fighters, the ASRAAM is a seriously deterrent to a forward quarter BVR attack since it has competitive range performance with many BVR missiles, and the seeker sensitivity to acquire such against a clear night sky background.
Since the ASRAAM is compatible with the Sidewinder rail, the only integration issues are those to do with a Helmet Mounted Display, which are in many respects simpler than integrating systems into the airframe.
The AIM-132 ASRAAM is to become the RAAF's primary WVR AAM, carried on the F/A-18 Hornet.

It would be the same position if the US purchased Asraam, they would be acknowledging they were wrong to pull-out or restrict the project which the media would pick up on.
The ASRAAM however is not equipped with thrust vectoring or pitch change enhancing surfaces, so it is a decidedly less capable missile in a pitch fight.

Germany left the ASRAAM project in the early 1990s after experiencing technical and funding issues, and in the spring of 1995 initiated a separate project, the IRIS-T.
Specifically, Germany wanted to redesign the ASRAAM to match or exceed the maneuverability of the Archer (which had been seriously underestimated by NATO), while Britain favored a high-speed, low-drag solution with relatively limited maneuverability but significantly extended range compared to the Sidewinder.
The ASRAAM also has a LOAL (Lock-On After Launch) ability which is a distinct advantage when the missile is carried in an internal bay such as in the upcoming F-35 Lightning II.

The ASRAAM (and I very well could be wrong in this one) is a relatively new missle, but I really don't know if it is an upgrade from a previous system like the 9X is. I'll be the first to admit that I know very little about what other countries have for weapons systems.
Also, I don't know if the ASRAAM has helmet-mounted aiming and cueing like the 9X does, or if it can be slaved to the radar to track a target- from what I've read Sidewinders have been able to do the radar thing for quite some time.
Now, to the side of the ASRAAM, if it is an entirely new missle (not an upgrade, like the 9X), then there may not be any ingrained ideas about "this is how we've always done it, lets stick with that"; this may give it more flexibility in the long run.
