  ASROC
The ASROC (Anti-Submarine Rocket) was the U.S. Navy's main ship-borne standoff anti-submarine weapon from the mid-1950s to the 1980s.
The ARSOC with MK 44 was known as MOD 3, and with the MK 46, it became the MOD 4.
In September 1989, at the end of the Cold War, the nuclear capability of ASROC was removed.

  ASROC
ASROC (for "Anti-Submarine Rocket") is an antisubmarine missile system, developed by the United States Navy, and installed on over 200 surface ships, generally cruisers and destroyers.
The first ASROC system, using the MK-112 "Matchbox" launcher, was developed in the 1950s and installed in the 1960s.
VLA missiles were introduced into the fleet in 1993 as a baseline weapon for the cruisers and destroyers equipped with the Aegis combat system and as a replacement for the ASROC weapon on Spruance-class destroyers when the original ASROC launchers were replaced by the MK 41 VLS.

The ASROC weapons were relatively small devices designed to fit inside the distinctive eight-cell box launcher found on almost all cruisers and destroyers of the 1960's-1980's.
The nuclear depth charge configured ASROC on the other hand was a relatively simple device, as it was nothing more complicated than a ballistic, unguided rocket with a depth charge as payload.
ASROC was housed in a MK 112 eight-barrel ready service launcher or in the ASROC storage magazine on the 01 level, Port side for Gearing class cans.

 ASROC
Description: ASROC is a three stage, solid fuel rocket comprised of a rocket motor (MK 12), airframe assembly and a torpedo or depth bomb payload.
In April of 1956, N.O.T.S. received approval from the Bureau of Ordnance to initiate the development of ASROC and was assigned the role of Technical Director of the weapons system as well design agent of the missile including the adaptation kit, (depth charge less warhead) for the nuclear payload.
The ASROC system was phased out of the U.S. Navy in the 1990s in favor of the MK 41 Vertical Launch System and the Vertical ASROC missile.

Asroc is useful but a ship can only have so many aboard at a time.
The current torpedoes have a 100+lb explosive warhead in the form of a shaped charge, and in some situations it is considered small even though it is designed to explode on contact with a sub.
The ASROC has the advantage of being able to be fired in sea state 9 when the choppers are grounded, or if a sub appears where the chopper is and you need a quick shoot.

The RUM-139A is an RUR-5 ASROC rocket with a completely new solid-rocket booster section, for launch from the MK 41 VLS of modern U.S. Navy surface combat ships.
In addition to the ASROC's inertial guidance system, the VL-Asroc uses a digital autopilot, which controls the flight path using the thrust-vector control of the MK 114 MOD 0 solid-rocket booster.

The surface-launched Anti-Submarine Rocket (ASROC) became operational in 1961 in two variants – one carrying a parachute-retarded Mk 44 torpedo and the other a low-yield W-44 nuclear depth charge.
ASROC’s solid-fuel motor could loft either payload to a maximum range of approximately 10,000 yards.
The resulting data was used to formulate tactical doctrine for ASROC and to refine the Navy’s understanding of underwater weapon effects on both platforms and sensors.

 ASROC - Definition, explanation
A surface ship first detects an enemy submarine by using sonar, then fires an ASROC missile, which has a torpedo or depth charge on the tip, toward the target.
(Alternatively, if the missile is instead equipped with a depth charge, it merely sinks to a predetermined depth and then explodes.) An ASROC missile can carry either a nuclear or conventional explosive, although the nuclear depth charges were phased out by the 1990s.
The first ASROC system, using the MK-112 "Matchbox" launcher, was developed in the 1950s and installed in the 1960s.
