In addition to the Tempe, Arizona campus, ASU has three other campuses: its West campus was created in 1984 in Phoenix; its Polytechnic campus in 1996 in Mesa; and its newest campus in Downtown Phoenix opens in August 2006.
At his inauguration, President Crow outlined his vision for transforming ASU into a New American University—one that is open and inclusive; that embraces its cultural, socioeconomic, and physical setting; and that promotes use-inspired research.

The current leadership at ASU is strong and forward thinking; however, if the ASU West campus becomes a separate institution, it must be an independent institution that reports directly to the Board of Regents, not to a regional director located more than 140 miles away.
Second, we support the ASU West campus to continue as part of ASU, or be established as a separate, independently-governed institution reporting directly to the Board of Regents.

An e-mail sent out late Tuesday from ASU West Provost Mark Searle stressed that the decision came after much discussion and did not indicate a lack of commitment to management education at the west Phoenix campus.
When Crow met with ASU West faculty during an academic assembly Wednesday, he said dropping the campus' MBA program prevents comparisons between similar degrees offered at two locations in the university system and avoids duplication of programs.
