Topic: ATAPI

  ATA and ATAPI Overview
ATAPI is fundamentally different from ATA (ATA-1, ATA-2, ATA-2) in the way it operates through the use of command packets.
ATAPI commands differ because they do not contain a LUN field or have a control byte.
One noticeable difference between ATAPI and ATA is how command is written with the first DRQ in ATA whereas in ATAPI the command packet is written instead.

Some ATAPI master devices float the bus when a non-existant slave device is selected.
Note that ATAPI masters that don't keep a separate copy of the error and status registers for drive 1 may continue to show those error conditions when switching back to drive 0.
In this scenario, there is one ATAPI device on the chain and it is master.

 What is ATAPI?
ATAPI is a set of extensions to the ATA standards to allow ATA CD/DVD drives and tape drives.
Maintenance of the ATAPI standard was later transferred to the T13 Technical Committee, the group that defines the ATA standard.
The ATAPI standard ceased to exist as a separate document when it became part of the core ATA standard with the publication of ATA-4 in 1998.

ATAPI units are generally much less expensive and are more often used in name-brand systems as well as by typical home computer users.
Since the ATAPI units are generally more popular with the masses, we will start with them and follow with a SCSI Roundup article shortly.

What is ATAPI? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: AT Attachment Packet Interface
ATAPI (AT Attachment Packet Interface) is an interface between your computer and attached CD-ROM drives and tape backup drives.
ATAPI provides the additional commands needed for controlling a CD-ROM player or tape backup so that your computer can use the IDE interface and controllers to control these relatively newer device types.
ATAPI is part of the Enhanced IDE (EIDE) interface (also known as ATA-2).

 Enhanced IDE/Fast-ATA/ATA-2 FAQ [1 of 2]
The ATA Packet Interface (ATAPI) is a standard designed for devices such as CD-ROMs and tape drives that plug into an ordinary ATA (IDE) port.
Moreover, the complexity and novelty of ATAPI means that there are some variations even among implementations of the same revision.
Writing an OS ATAPI driver that works with all CD-ROMs, therefore, is a daunting task and not all have succeeded equally well.

ATA Packet Interface (ATAPI) / IDE
The ATAPI interface is a derivative of the standard IDE interface; regular IDE commands cannot be used properly for CD-ROM drives, so a modified command structure was created.
ATAPI itself is described in more detail here, in the general discussion of the IDE/ATA device interface.
Warning: One problem that is often encountered when configuring ATAPI devices is accidentally connecting them to a connector on a sound card that appears to be an IDE channel but really is not.

Addonics thinks that they have the solution with their IDE to SCSI and ATAPI to SCSI adapters.
The ATAPI to SCSI converter was flawless in our testing, providing identical or even better performance to that of the device running on the IDE bus.
The ATAPI converter's price is a little more difficult to justify with a price comparison but with the dropping price of CD-RWs to the sub-$80 mark, you wouldn't pay too much more for an IDE drive with SCSI converter over a SCSI drive at a slower speed.
