Asynchronous Transfer Mode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ATM was intended to provide a single unified networking standard that could support both synchronous channel networking (PDH, SDH) and packet-based networking (IP, Frame relay, etc), whilst supporting multiple levels of quality of service for packet traffic.
ATM sought to resolve the conflict between circuit-switched networks and packet-switched networks by mapping both bitstreams and packet-streams onto a stream of small fixed-size 'cells' tagged with virtual circuit identifiers.
ATM will remain deployed for some time in higher-speed interconnects where carriers have already committed themselves to existing ATM deployments; ATM is used here as a way of unifying PDH/SDH traffic and packet-switched traffic under a single infrastructure.

 Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Switching
ATM is a cell-switching and multiplexing technology that combines the benefits of circuit switching (guaranteed capacity and constant transmission delay) with those of packet switching (flexibility and efficiency for intermittent traffic).
The ATM physical layer has four functions: Cells are converted into a bitstream, the transmission and receipt of bits on the physical medium are controlled, ATM cell boundaries are tracked, and cells are packaged into the appropriate types of frames for the physical medium.
ATM signaling uses the one-pass method of connection setup that is used in all modern telecommunication networks, such as the telephone network.

Automated teller machine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ATMs are required by law to inform you of the fees that the machine will charge you, this may come in the push through menu or it may be on a sticker on the machine.
Many ATMs usually print each transaction in a paper journal that is rolled into a roll of paper stored inside the ATMs, which allows both the users of the ATMs and the related financial institutions to settle things based on the records in the journal in case there is a dispute.
ATM transactions are usually encrypted with DES but most transaction processors will require the use of the more secure Triple DES by 2005.

ATM skimming   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
ATM skimming devices come in two flavors: ones that interfere with the ATM operation and ones that don't.
The skimmers that interfere with the ATM operation are a bit easier to detect because even though customers insert or swipe their cards, it's not the ATM's card reader so the ATM isn't actually being used and the customer isn't getting any money.
The ATM skimming task force that Kurt Helwig's organization, the EFTA, is leading is bringing together all segments of the ATM industry -- manufacturers, processors and financial institutions, as well as the U.S. Secret Service, which is involved in ATM skimming investigations.

The congestion conditions in ATM networks are expected to be extremely dynamic requiring fast hardware mechanisms for relaxing the network to steady state, and necessitating the network itself to be actively involved in quickly achieving this steady state.
An ATM cell may encounter congestion and suffer variable delay due to bufferring within the ATM switches, and may even be dropped either due to congestion control or due to header checksum error.
