ATX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ATX form motherboards became increasingly popular because of their advantages over older AT motherboards.
Because the ATX PSU uses the motherboard's power switch, turning on the power in situations that do not utilize an ATX motherboard is possible by shorting the green wire from the ATX connector to any fl wire on the connector (or ground).
ATX allowed each motherboard manufacturer to put these ports in a rectangular area on the back of the system, with an arrangement they could define themselves (though a number of general patterns depending on what ports the motherboard offers have been followed by most manufacturers).

Intel(R) Desktop Boards - ATX Motherboard Specification
The ATX form factor is essentially a Baby-AT baseboard rotated 90 degrees within the chassis enclosure and a new mounting configuration for the power supply.
An ATX power supply, which has a side-mounted fan, allows direct cooling of the processor and add-in cards making a secondary fan or active heatsink unnecessary in most system applications.
ATX is a specification that is freely available to the whole industry.

Standards and specs: The ATX case and power supply
The cost of a generic ATX case and power supply is fairly low and it's not unheard of to end up with a spare after a computer fails.
By the way, in the event of a component failure, an ATX power supply should not produce a "startling noise." I do not believe the standard formally specifies which noises may be considered "startling," but it is an amusing phrase to see on the pages of a specification.
ATX machines gain a huge amount of effective reliability from the knowledge that in the event of a problem with the power supply, you can simply go to any computer store and pick up a replacement.

With regard to thermal management, ATX components differ from Baby AT components in that the processor slot is located close to the power supply, rather than to the front panel of the chassis.

ATX / Mini ATX / Extended ATX Form Factor
The ATX case is similar to a Baby AT case except that the holes in the back are altered to fit the changed design of the ATX form factor motherboard, in particular the integrated I/O ports.
Most ATX cases have more features than AT cases because they are newer, and they are sometimes more expensive for the same reason, though this is less common now that AT case production has dropped in volume.
The different form factors in the ATX family are similar, and the biggest differences between motherboards of different ATX-style form factors are dimensions, and the placement of mounting holes.

Indeed, ATX is an evolution of the baby-AT form factor.
ATX also defines a stacked I/O area, called the multimedia I/O back panel, which is located to the rear of the chassis and measures 61/4 inches (158 mm) by 13/4 inches (44.5 mm).
ATX boards come in two sizes: A full-size version measures 12 by 9.6 inches (305 by 244 mm), while a mini-ATX measures 11.2 by 8.2 inches (284 by 208 mm).

 Form Factors Rev 1.3 Motherboards.org
ATX was developed(introduced in 1995) as an evolution of the Baby AT form factor and was defined to address four areas of improvement: enhanced ease of use, better support for current and future I/O, better support for current and future processor technology, and reduced total system cost.
The ATX is basically a Baby AT rotated 90 degrees and providing a new mounting configuration for the power supply.
The longer side of the board is used to host more on-board I/O. The ATX power supply, rather than blowing air out of the chassis, as in most Baby AT platforms, provides air-flow through the chassis and across the processor.

microATX (also known as µATX) is a small PC motherboard standard, with a maximum size of 9.6×9.6" (244×244 mm) (the standard ATX size is 12×9.6" maximum).
However, since microATX towers are a lot smaller than typical ATX towers, there are fewer I/O ports.
