The fish known as "Snapper" in New Zealand and Australia is Pagrus (Chrysophrys) auratus, a member of the family Sparidae of porgies and sea breams.
About 100 species of snapper are currently recognised, divided into about 16 genera.
Snappers are found in the tropical and subtropical regions of all the oceans.

This snapper is found in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts to Brazil, although it is uncommon north of the Carolinas.
Both juvenile and adult northern red snapper are carnivorous, and adults are bottom-oriented predators.
The northern red snapper reaches an average length of 24 inches (60cm), with a maximum length of 39 inches (100cm) and may weigh up to 20 pounds.
