AUI (Alcohol Use Inventory): Pearson Assessments, alcohol abuse, alcoholism, drinking
The self-report format of the AUI test enables substance-abuse professionals to compare an individual's perceptions about his or her use of alcohol with the interviewer's perceptions and those of family members and others.
Because the purpose of the AUI is to assess the drinking styles of problem drinkers, DUI (Driving Under the Influence) subjects might not fall into this category.
The AUI is not appropriate for pre- and post-treatment administration because of the historical nature of many of the assessment's questions.

Because aUI is pervaded by a phonetic symbolism it could also be considered a 'physiognomic' language (Brown, 1955).
Weilgart theorized that the harmony between sound, symbol, and meaning could be significant to optimum mental health because it might facilitate communication between the conscious mind, which thinks in synonyms, with the subconscious, which associates in assonances.
On the other hand, aUI was not necessarily designed as a highly specialized scientific-technical language, since for instance such terms as are contained in the Latin classification system for living things are already international.

Nine northeastern universities joined in sponsoring AUI in 1946: Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, The Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, the University of Rochester, and Yale University.
Since AUI is an independent corporation and not a consortium, individual Trustees serve as fiduciaries and do not represent their home institutions on the Board.
A great strength of AUI is the fact that its Board of Trustees deliberately maintains a broad balance of expertise in all major areas of science, as well as extensive experience in senior administration.

High Strangeness: The "Language of Space"
The little green spaceman told Weilgart that aUI was the literally universal language used by intelligent beings on all planets throughout the Cosmos.
If aUI is indeed a real language, it may be an outgrowth of a biology, physiology, and psychology, a background of sense- and speech-organs and of day-to-day and minute-to-minute bodily and environmental sensations, very different from the ones underlying human language.
aUI could easily be a language for robots--or even for the frail-bodied big-headed "Grays" with enormous dark "wrap-around" eyes described by alleged UFO abductees.

When this is attempted with coax wires and repeaters there is usually concern with electrical interference from other equipment, ground loops, surges and lightning which may strike in the vicinity of the cable link.
These potential problems all dissappear with the Model 370 LAN Spreader since the connection between the server and workstations is glass fiber and impervious to all of these disturbances. The full duplex signals of the AUI port are converted to light and driven over the fiber cables.
The AUI port power pins, which normally provides power for a transceiver, are used by the Model 370 to operate its circuitry, thus relieving the user from dealing with DC power or AC power adapters.A group of five LED's provide indication of Transmit Data, Receive Data, Link Status, Jabber and Collision.

I have in mind that each "widget" in an AUI will have a) a 3D location with respect to either the speaker/headphones or the user's anatomy, and b) a sound source whether it is a pre-recorded file or a software-generated stream of audio.
Similarly, AUI programmers need a way to get their own software entities (data input dialogs, data representations, action choice selection methods) represented audibly through stereo or 3D audio playback devices, which is to say, an API that includes ways of creating and controlling the various AUI features that people might wish to control.
Developing applications that make use of an AUI infrastructure means application developers themselves must think in terms of the audio sources which could correspond to their various interface and logical entities in the application domain.
