This album was the first of many with renowned producer Arif Mardin, and reached #1 in the US charts.

AWB is a funk-disco album by Average White Band, released in August of 1974 (see 1974 in music).
An enormous best-seller, AWB was the Average White Band's breakthrough record, stunning many listeners with its hard funk coming from a Scottish band.
AWB topped Billboard's Pop Albums and Black Albums charts.

The 1970s were very good for them, but by the 1980s, sales of their albums had fallen to such a point that they decided to break up.
Even though album sales have not necessarily increased, sampling of their music by over one hundred hip-hop and rap artists, as well as use of "Pick Up The Pieces" in a number of movies and commercials, worked to raise the band's visibility.
AWB is known for their funky 1970s groove.

This 'white album' put them over the top but I believe rabid fans will confirm it was their second (the first LP didn't do any business in the States, at least).
They played extremely well as was the case of any good R and B outfit--musical excellence always was a minimum entrance requirement to cut it in R and B. They even paid dues to elder statesmen The Isley Brothers by a faithful rendition of their "Work To Do".
So AWB triumphed after all--"Pick Up the Pieces" is an R and B standard, and people go "what?...oh yeah" when reminded that The Band who did it were a bunch of Scottish White boys.

After their 1973 debut album, Show Your Hand, went unnoticed, they hooked up with producer Arif Mardin to record Average White Band (frequently called AWB because of the initials on the cover).
AWB nearly replicated its success with the third album, Cut the Cake, and its title single, both of which reached the Top Ten.
AWB managed a couple more gold albums in Person to Person (January 1977) and Warmer Communications (March 1978), and its popularity lasted longer in the UK than in the US, but by the start of the '80s the band was permanently out of fashion.

Although their 1973 debut album, Show Your Hand, showed promise, it was not until the band was signed to Atlantic Records that its true potential blossomed.
AWB, also known as the "White Album" in deference to its cover art, was a superb collection and paired the band's dynamism with Arif Mardin's complementary production.
AWB also topped the US album chart but this euphoric period was abruptly halted in 1974 by the tragic death of Robbie McIntosh following a fatal ingestion of heroin at a Hollywood party.

If it wasn't apparent from its first album (on MCA), it is from the second: Scotland's Averge White Band is one of the best self-contained soul units in existence.
But chiefly responsible for the AWB's aural distinctiveness are the vocals: Lead singer Alan Gorrie (once in a good though little-known group called Forever More) often resembles early Steve Winwood in his strength and flexibility, while falsetto vocalist Hamish Stuart possesses an amazingly rich, rangy voice, which he uses with the daring of an aerialist.
The tracks are sequenced in such a way that the first half of the album emphasizes rhythmic energy while side two is dominated by a bittersweet romantic intensity.

Before this recording, I felt AWB was a "2nd division" funk aggregate, but from the introductory "Overture", I *HEARD* that these guys were finally on to a mini-funk masterpiece.

AWB has been hailed as the flest-sounding white group since the Stones, but that's true only in a very technical sense.
AWB's accomplishment is a worthy one, of course, particularly since it comes at a time when fl and white pop are more divorced from one another than ever.
It is devoid of personality, perhaps because the session musicians AWB emulates are generally faceless.

AWB by The Average White Band: Album Reviews
After debuting with 1973's excellent but neglected Show Your Hand (later reissued as Put It Where You Want It), the Average White Band switched from MCA to Atlantic and hit big with this self-titled gem.
Upon first hearing gutsy, Tower of Power-influenced funk like "Person to Person" and the instrumental "Pick Up the Pieces" (a number one R&B hit), many soul fans were shocked to learn that not only were the bandmembers white -- they were whites from Scotland.
Like Teena Marie five years later, AWB embraced soul and funk with so much conviction that it was clear this was anything but an "average" white band.

While producers have on several occasions during AWB's career attempted to tinker with the group's raw, loose sound to better match the then-popular style (whether it be late 70s disco or 80s electronic pop), AWB has always been at its best making jazz-infused funky music in the tradition of James Brown.
