 Introduction to the AWT
The AWT is the user interface toolkit provided as part of the Java language class library.
The AWT was designed so that programmers don't have worry about the details of tracking the mouse or reading the keyboard, nor attend to the details of writing to the screen.
The AWT was designed to provide a common set of tools for graphical user interface design that work on a variety of platforms.

AWT: Java's Achilles Heel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
AWT is a such a seriously flawed tool, Java's promise of cross-platform compatibility will never be realized unless AWT is discarded, or at least substantially rewritten.
AWT was obviously designed from the top down to provide convenient high level objects such as menus and buttons.
AWT encourages each source of input (mouse, keyboard, network, window manager, your program's actions) to handle events directly; consequently, the application's data structures are likely to be traversed simultaneously by any number of different threads.

alphaWorks : Remote AWT for Java : FAQs
Remote AWT for Java implements all AWT APIs without using any native code and in a client-server fashion that is transparent to the Java application.
Note that Remote AWT for Java 2 should work well with any pair of versions of JDK/JRE 1.2.x at both ends; however, this was not tested, and therefore we recommend JDK 1.2.2, which was the version that we tested.
From the user's perspective, Remote AWT for Java and X-Server differ in several respects: X-Server is a solution for remote presentation at a lower system level, whereas Remote AWT for Java is a solution only for Java applications.

 AWT vs Swing
The AWT provides a high level of abstraction for your Java program since it hides you from the underlying details of the GUI your program will be running on.
There is a much smaller set of AWT components available, thus placing the burden on the programmer to create his or her own AWT-based components.
In general, AWT components are appropriate for simple applet development or development that targets a specific platform (i.e.

The AWT is undoubtedly one of the most visible and critical pieces of the Java platform.
The peer model in the AWT was designed for the sole purpose of being able to provide a truly native look-and-feel by delegating the look-and-feel of the components to a set of underlying "peer" classes.
We are currently working on providing "peerless" versions of the AWT UI components, which will be called the "Swing" set of components, and they will all be based on the Lightweight UI Framework introduced in the beta3 release of JDK1.1.

Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) is a set of application program interfaces (APIs) used by Java programmers to create graphical user interface (GUI) objects, such as buttons, scroll bars, and windows.
AWT is part of the Java Foundation Classes (JFC) from Sun Microsystems, the company that originated Java.
A more recent set of GUI interfaces called Swing extends the AWT so that the programmer can create generalized GUI objects that are independent of a specific operating system's windowing system.

Java AWT: Delegation Event Model   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In an AWT program, the event source is typically a GUI component and the listener is commonly an "adapter" object which implements the appropriate listener (or set of listeners) in order for an application to control the flow/handling of events.
Although these are the concrete set defined by the AWT, programs are free to define their own event types by subclassing either java.util.EventObject or one of the AWT event classes.
Therefore, for this case, the AWT defines that each component provide specific protected methods (that can be overridden by subclasses) which actually dispatch the events to listeners if they exist.

 Java AWT Native Graphics Proposal
Write native C code to provide a hook to the native graphics environment or, if the AWT source is site licensed, modify the AWT source for each platform to provide the necessary hook.
Even when successfully implemented, the result of this approach is that each developer must maintain their specialized AWT hook for every platform.
If the Java AWT does not provide some mechanism for accessing the native graphics environment, developers will continue to implement their own, often inconsistent and unreliable, methods for getting around this restriction.
