The last Route 66 town to be bypassed by I-40, Williams is known as "The Gateway to the Grand Canyon." The one and one-half mile stretch of Route 66 through the heart of the small town was once thick with motels, restaurants and shops.
Route 66 runs the length of the town and some motels, gas stations and businesses have operated since the highway's beginning in 1926.
Route 66 crosses the southern boundary of the Hualapai Indian Reservation, and Peach Springs is the headquarters of the tribe.

The Shield having icons of the eight Route 66 states was ceremoniously relayed from Chicago to Santa Monica for the 66th Anniversary Rice also displayed some of his neon work such as the familiar Route 66 shield in pink and blue, and an interesting longhorn skull with a pink neon 66 emerging from it.

Two people were sent to the hospital after a motorcycle accident that took place on the Oatman Road stretch of Route 66 Wednesday morning.
According to reports, William Miller and Charlotte Miller, 53, of South Carolina, were riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle towards Oatman at Ed’s Camp at the switchbacks when the bike left the roadway.
He was booked into the District II Jail without further incident.

I am looking through the Rand McNally Atlas, all along Route 66 for the points of interest marked with a little red box; I am listing the ones that are within a few miles of Route 66.
That route is 127 miles from the point where we leave I40 till we get back on it.
That piece of Route 66 that I found in western Arizona turns out to be the longest stretch of Route 66 still in existence!
