Aachen was annexed by France in 1801 and given to Prussia after the Congress of Vienna (1814–15).

Aachen is the home of several educational institutions, most importantly the RWTH Aachen University of Technology (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule), one of the major universities for technical studies, especially for mechanical engineering.
