Stale gags and silly spoofs make this one cheap 'Date' - The Boston Globe
Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg are two of the many writers behind the Wayans brothers' ''Scary Movie" franchise, which made fun of the horror genre in all its gory glory.
The two go it alone with ''Date Movie," and if their goal was to make a spoof film with heart, the end result has an irregular beat at best.
Seltzer and Friedberg rely on the usual melange of frat-boy humor and pop-culture references in an effort to lampoon romantic comedies.

Firstly, the writers ("two of the six writers of 'Scary Movie'", according to the tagline) Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer have questionable pedigrees.
When 'Airplane!' plucked scenes from little-known B-movie 'Zero Hour', it was in the knowledge that such badly written and ham-acted rubbish could be made into effective comedy by the merest of tweaks.

Date Movie is a 2006 spoof of romantic comedies directed and written by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, two of the writers of the first Scary Movie.

USCCB - (Film and Broadcasting) - Date Movie
Crudely sophomoric sendup of recent popular romantic comedies barely held together by a perfunctory plot involving the upcoming wedding of a formerly obese waitress (Alyson Hannigan) to the man of her dreams (Adam Campbell), a wedding that the latter's seductive ex-flame (Sophie Monk) threatens to sabotage.
Following in the genre-skewering footprints of "Scary Movie," directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer spoof such films as "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," "Hitch" and "My Best Friend's Wedding," among others, in a nonstop barrage of vulgar, interminably adolescent and unfunny sight gags that test the limits of its PG-13 rating.

Certainly, Date Movie screenwriters Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (who also directed this silly-minded dud) cannot be mentioned in the same breath as these effective moviemaking satirists.
In culinary arts analogy, Brooks and the Zuckers are to the comical richness of a hearty roast beef lunch whereas the Friedberg/Seltzer collaboration are to the mere luster of a half-eaten, stale bologna sandwich.
But for the most part, Seltzer and his cohort Friedberg lazily serves up the referenced source of ridicule without fortifying their irreverent bits with any comprehensible gusto.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Date Movie: Unrated Edition
Writer-director Aaron Seltzer proves just how tough the parody genre can be in Date Movie (2006) by not only summoning barely enough gags to populate a 75-min.
The picture is essentially a short film padded to feature-length by Seltzer's excruciating proclivity for drawing out decent throwaway gags for minutes-on-end until the sheer unfunniness of the execution overwhelms the conceptual promise, if any.
Also on board are 12 deleted/extended/alternate scenes, extended dailies, interviews with cast members about their own dating histories, an actually amusing "making-of" spoof of Peter Jackson's incessant self-documentation, audition tapes, a reduction of the entire movie into six minutes, an optional (very optional) laugh track, and several trailers and other promotional items.

This would-be spoof of romantic comedies, written and directed by two of the "Scary Movie" writers (Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer), falls prey to the misconception -- common in modern American humor -- that to make reference to something is the same thing as parodying it.
For example, there's a scene where two women, rivals for the same man's affections, appear in costumes from "Kill Bill," with the same music playing in the background.
Now, I'm guessing Friedberg and Seltzer referred to that scene around the set as "the 'Kill Bill' parody." But it's not a parody.

Directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer can't stage comedy, can't write jokes, lack imagination, and extend scenes beyond the point of tolerance.
This tendency goes back to the craftsmanship issue.
Friedberg and Seltzer are unable to find enough inspiration within the genre they satirize, so they go looking for ideas elsewhere, preferably from recent hits in order to sucker us into thinking they stumbled onto something clever.
