Topic: Aaron Stainthorpe

Death grunt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nick Holmes (from Paradise Lost), Darren White (from Anathema) and Aaron Stainthorpe (from My Dying Bride) were the main developers of grunts within this context, in the early 1990s.
Stainthorpe was one of the first to make combined use of grunts and clean singing, a technique which was further developed mainly by Mikael Åkerfeldt (from Opeth).
Funeral doom metal bands have taken a different approach to death grunts.

Get Ready to ROCK! Interview with Aaron Stainthorpe of metal rock band My Dying Bride
Aaron: Yes, there were moments when it all got very tiring and we were looking for a break, on the other hand, though, there were moments when we were really lazy and we would take quite a lot of time off.
Aaron: Our old guitar player Calvin (Robertshaw) had this dream one night, when he kind of had this vision that mankind...we’re like a clock and when we lived our lives, we would be like 100% and that so far we had lived 34.788% of our lives...
Aaron: I think that they’re a testament to how interesting My Dying Bride must be if people cannot put their finger on what to describe them with.

For vocalist Aaron of North Yorkshire's gothic/death/doom band My Dying Bride, nothing would be more satisfactory to him than bringing the band to tour the U.S. in support of their latest effort, _The Angel And The Dark River_ (Peaceville Records/Music For Nations).
Their latest album had been out in Europe since May states Aaron (the album is released in North America in the coming weeks), saying that the band has already done an extensive amount of touring in Europe.
Aaron adds that once the band has toured the U.S. (if it happens), the band will then head back into the studio to begin work on a follow up LP to _TAatDR_.

Songwriter Aaron also displayed an excellent variety of vocal styles which totally defined the album even more, altogether showing stunning musicanship by a band with a potential to break out of the underground.
As Aaron stated in an article in metal maniacs, he realized they were amateur in comparison to Iron Maiden.
In fact he could no longer continue to even keep on with the band, it was too much for him according to him and Aaron because of stress so he left in best interest of the band.

AARON: The fans voted for their favourite top ten tracks which we have used on both compilation records as well as some other material that we felt the fans deserved to hear.
AARON: In early interviews, we did dismiss gothic links to MDB because we all have knowledge of gothic music over here in Europe which is mainly electronic weirdness and we just couldn’t understand the comparisons.
AARON: The world is a dismal now as it was when I first began writing about it 10 years ago, it’s just that now I find it more and more difficult to come up with new idea’s for lyrics as I seem to have written about every misery that has befallen us all.

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by metal band My Dying Bride called Songs of Darkness, Words of Light
Aaron and Co decided to leave all their "technical ambitions" in the past and focused more on the melodic and majestic paths they've followed with their latest two releases "The Light at the End of the World" and "The Dreadful Hours" - something that will definitely please their fans worldwide.
Aaron takes the lead and delivers one of his most emotional performances ever, with a little help from Andrew and Hamish.
Aaron's "evil" vocals are flirting with heavy guitars and strong drum beats long enough to prepare you for a keyboard melody that is just as good as the ones used by Cradle Of Filth in their recent releases.

"My first was a Texas TI99 back in the early Eighties, then a Spectrum, which was great." When Aaron co-founded My Dying Bride in 1990, computing inevitably took a back seat as the band huddled in dark corners to craft their unique blend of tragic love, religious symbolism and, er, very heavy guitars.
Aaron is an accomplished artist, designing the band's CD covers and posters.
Last year Aaron intended to keep an on-line diary as the band toured across the States, but their laptop broke on day one.

Aaron's lyrics were always very poetic, but in this album he wrote some of the darkest, tragically romantic verses ever in doom metal.
Aaron only uses his weeping clear vocals, as a death grunt clearly wouldn't fit the music.
Aaron put his grunts aside (it will not be until their album 'The Light at the End of the World' before he digs them up again), the guitars are slightly less heavy and also the production of this album is much clearer and finer than on their previous one.

Usually My Dying Bride's tightly wound instrumental builds rescue the songs from Stainthorpe's incompetence, but on this one, the material is handicapped from the start.
And the bonus -- a video for "The Cry of Mankind" -- only emphasizes the problem further, a showcase for Stainthorpe to pose seminude in Christ mode, so relentlessly narcissistic you begin to wonder what world this guy's from, while his band is pushed to the background.

My Dying Bride was formed in June 1990 by Calvin Robertshaw, Aaron Stainthorpe, Andrew Craighan and Rick Miah.
The music is built mostly around heavy bass and well-performed drumming accompanied perfectly by violin (as long as Martin Powell was part of the band) and keyboard.
On the first releases he usually growls á la death metal but by each album the vocals become more clear and on the latest release there are only a few growling parts with the rest of the vocals being done in his unique dark and deep voice.

Aaron Stainthorpe’s mournful passages combined with faster death-like ones and some of the most melancholy lyrics of their career show what sets My Dying Bride apart from other doom metallers.
Stainthorpe’s trademark death metal grunts accompany his distinctive clean vocals so effectively, that it is for this reason that My Dying Bride has been so successful.

The whole song literally explodes two minutes into the cut with a riff fervor not unlike “The Songless Bird.” Guitarists Andres Craighan and newcomer Hamish Glenncross (ex-Seer’s Tear) have upped the ante markedly by using sinister hooks and old school death metal riffage to complement and provide contrast to My Dying Bride’s reflective periods.
Stainthorpe is unequivocally at a career high, especially in his death metal delivery.
Someone must’ve put something in his curry, ‘cause when Stainthorpe’s fiery maw opens he levels his peers and even his past work.

This English five-piece pens such bleak, soul-crushing tunes that its use of a lone foghorn to conclude agonizing opening cut "The Cry of Mankind" is strikingly appropriate (and most likely self-indulgent in the hands of a less convincing outfit).
Generally, the arrangements stretch out over long, progressive, and swampy plains of powerfully droning, yet still memorable, guitar riffs, patiently rumbling drums, and Stainthorpe's vague and ghastly lyrical drippings, presumably painfully squeezed out of his own slit wrists.
Not unexpectedly, songs take their sweet time getting their point across, clocking in between seven and 12 minutes, standouts being "From Darkest Skies," "Black Voyage," and "Your Shameful Heaven," the latter of which actually picks up the tempo beyond a snail's slime-trail-oozing pace, but with the same destination in mind: Pure, utter, unrelenting depression.

A second album, Let Loose The Swans, saw Aaron singing, rather than growling in the traditional death metal style, and is their most distinctive and accomplished work to date.
The vitality and colour of the band was enshrined in their 1994 release, the I Am The Bloody Earth EP, with the a-side featuring guest vocals from Ghost (of G.G.F.H.), while the b-side, "Transcending (Into The Exquisite)", featured a challenging remix from local dance gurus Drug Free America.

Few can be compared to Bradford’s (U.K.) unique avant-garde doom/gothic metal six-piece outfit My Dying Bride (Who consist of vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe, guitarists Andrew Craighan and Hamish Glencross, bassist Ade Jackson, drummer Shaun Taylor-Steels and live keyboardist Sarah Stanton).
Although there’s a multitude of melodic doom bands in the scene, few match in terms of their atmospherics or dark romantic lyrical tapestries.
Stainthorpe soon shifts into his clean vocal range in typically morbid fashion, while the drumming makes way for the sweeping church sounding like keyboards, which all up makes for an epic and unforgettable track.

UK doom troupe My Dying Bride have enjoyed several career highs: first, 1993's genre-defining Turn Loose The Swans; second, 1996's ominous Like Gods Of The Sun; then, this year's lethal deuce of quintessential rarities compilations, Meisterwerk 1 & 2; and now, the devastating The Dreadful Hours.
Frontman Aaron Stainthorpe re-invents himself vocally and the band musically-- not by rehashing old riffs and sounds, but by expanding upon former concepts (longer songs, deathier vocals, etc.) then transcending them.
But around 3:55, the shock troops go marching in with the most guttural growls and agonizing higher screams (matched only by "A Cruel Taste Of Winter"), the double-kickdrum slash-and-burn assault, and relentlessly snarling riffage until the tune reprises its opening acoustics and fades to a quiet end.
