The Passion of Hussain |
 | | The tenth day of Muharram, known as Aashura, marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in the year 680 A.D. on the plains of Karbala, Iraq. |
 | | Each year, the first ten days of Muharram culminating in Aashura, are traditionally marked by Muslims of the Shi’a branch with processions, gatherings for recitations of the tragedy, self-flagellation as an _expression of mourning in some countries, and passion plays re-enacting the event. |
 | | The United States should learn the lessons of Muharram, Aashura, and the bombings of March 2nd: The Iraqi Arab Shi'a community and Ayatollah Sistani should not be taken for granted in their temporary support of the Coalition's occupation of post-war Iraq, nor their demands for free elections. |
