Abacab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another noteworthy element of Abacab is drummer Phil Collins' further refinement of his distinctive drum sound, involving reverberation, noise gates and compression in order to achieve an inordinately loud and authoritative percussive effect.
Mathematically, "ABACAB" is the hexadecimal representation of the decimal integer 11,250,859.
Due to its daring shift in style, Abacab is generally considered one of Genesis' most important releases, and was a springboard for future hit albums Genesis and Invisible Touch.

Abacab is really a transitional album, and only with their next studio album one could say that the transformation into a plain, commercial rock band was completed.
Abacab was one of the bravest moves by Genesis and it's timing was perfect.
Abacab is a mixed bag with some material you should find on a Phil Collins album.“No reply at all”, “man on the corner” and “like it or not” are good pop songs with chart abilities but no Genesis lover was waiting for anything like that.

While there are still some traces of their art rock past, the album is primarily filled with a new wave sound and concise songs.
Abacab [+] rose to number seven on the charts, which is a tribute the band's ability to bring intellectual pop to the masses with catchy melodies.
Genesis [+] is no ordinary pop band -- they use driving beats and unusual syncopation (by pop standards) on the title track and "No Reply at All," a song that employs the horn section from Earth, Wind and Fire.

Abacab from 1981 was truly the first album where Genesis started to go more towards the sound that newer fans know them for.
"Abacab" is a mathematical term and rather strange for a song title but this is a fantastic song, especially from Banks side, there is also a great guitar solo from Rutherford in the end.
The Abacab album was the band's first to be self-produced and was their collaboration with engineer Hugh Padgham(whom worked with Peter Gabriel and The Police at that point) whom drummer/vocalist Phil Collins collaborated with on his Top 10 Multi-Platinum solo effort Face Value.

Ground and Sky review - Genesis - Abacab
"Me and Sarah Jane", "Dodo/Lurker" and "Abacab" at least make a nod to the band's prog past (am I the only one who doesn't hate the throbbing jam at the end of the title track?) and are all good songs.
Abacab is definitely a pop album, if an interesting one.
Hopefully nobody's too put out that this album doesn't bother me. I think their pop writing got worse as the decade went on, but at this point they were doing fine with the short song format.

ith Abacab, the prog commitment ended as Genesis freed themselves to make music that better matched their remaining skills to the new market.
"Abacab" sent the message, featuring a large "arena" sound that dogged the listener with urgency, emotion, and modern edginess.
What it all meant was anybody's guess (no one minded "Sussudio" either), but the band played it like it mattered and that made all the difference.

Abacab is an album full of good songs, but it's also an album with something of a serious identity crisis.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing - I quite like Abacab and Keep It Dark, and they demonstrate that, when he used to try to emulate Gabriel's throat-thrasing vocal style, there used to be a raw power to Phil Collins' voice which his latter-day career has carefully buried.
Abacab, in retrospect, is a bit of a mixed bag - but, being a bit of a transitional piece (despite having been preceded by two other albums with the Banks/Collins/Rutherford lineup), it was bound to be.

 Abacab
Abacab, or The Abster, or Abster-Peanut, is a ruddy Abyssinian female who was born in 1990.
She was supposed to be the foundation queen for Desert Moon cattery but she was never destined to be a breeding cat.
When I was showing her regularly, a good online friend made a set of cage curtains for her, which had the "abacab" album art on the inside back, and her name quilted in an apron that hung down to cover the cage trestle.

Abacab - the switch into the new era for Genesis
I never bought the 'Abacab' vinyl LP, but I did buy it on CD later, and in August 1999 I got the miniature classics CD.
'Abacab' is the start of the last era of Genesis, when they had their own studio and total creative freedom to do what they wanted in theory, but then instead became a part-time group, fitting it inbetween all kinds of other projects.

The guitar at the end of "Abacab" sounds a bit different than it eventually would--I imagine that at this point in the tour they hadn't yet settled down into the new numbers yet.
The artwork is by me. There are some rather funny and, for once, intelligible tracks of the band in the dressing room before and after the show, as well as a very short bit of their soundcheck before the show.
The first track and "Abacab" both fade in--the beginning portion of both songs is missing, though not so much that you miss any vocals.

Even though it isn't the great pop creation that everyone and their pet bobcats told me that it was, the story of Abacab is mostly good news.

ABACAB   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
(I know, most prog bands suffocated in the late ‘70s trying the same thing, but this was after all Genesis.) The opening “Abacab” marks a clean departure from the past: noisy and relentless synthesizers from Tony Banks create an unscalable wall of sound, barbed by Phil Collins’ spiked rhythms and Mike Rutherford’s intractable bass.
The same epic scale returns on “Dodo/Lurker,” not coincidentally the other “long” song on Abacab and one that would have felt at home on …And Then There Were Three.
And nothing in Genesis’ past was streamlined like “Man on the Corner” or “Another Record.” As good as Abacab is, I’d be remiss in not mentioning that “Keep It Dark” and “Who Dunnit?” sound gimmicky and could be considered unbecoming a band of Genesis’ stature.

Though traditionalists cried foul, ABACAB was in fact more inventive and memorable than its comparatively leaden predecessor DUKE.
As always, there are some agreeably unusual song subjects, such as the alien abduction of "Keep It Dark." "Whodunnit" sounds more like Devo than like Gentle Giant, but the skewed melodic sensibility is a link to Genesis's Gabriel-era glory days.
Utilizing simpler melodies and more syncopated rhythms ("Me and Sarah Jane" even sports a reggae feel), ABACAB simultaneously simplifies and expands the Genesis sound.
