  Political Film Society - Abandon
Abandon, directed by Stephen Gaghan, is about a young man, Embry Larkin (played by Charlie Hunnam), who disappeared two years earlier.
When the film begins, the missing persons case is assigned to Detective Wade Handler (played by Benjamin Bratt) because he was the heir to a large fortune.
That Abandon is based on the novel Adam's Fall (2000) by Sean Desmond is perhaps the most revealing clue of all.

"Abandon" is a university campus thriller that follows the exploits of one Katie Burke (Katie Holmes) who is devotedly pushing her way through her financial thesis.
This film wasn't "adapted", "based on" or "inspired by" it was suggested by a third party who wasn't even the author.
In this film she just seems to be playing a more stressed out version of her television persona who may or may not have a screw loose.

Holmes and excellent cast get 'Abandon'-ed in new film - The Daily Texan - Entertainment   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Abandon feels a lot like one of Holmes' first films, Disturbing Behavior, which as a Stepford Wives set in high school and directed by a promising TV writer and first time director David Nutter, went in the wrong direction and wasn't able to recover.
That film was marred by test screenings, which allegedly took away the film's edge, and one can't help but feel while watching Abandon that the studio forced Gaghan to make cuts for the PG-13 rating the film bears, to appeal to Holmes' teenage audience.
Unfortunately, almost everyone involved with Abandon has made better films and the real tragedy is that some of these people may never be involved as much in a project after such a disaster.

This film weaves the talents and stories of those associated with it into a beautiful tapestry of character study.
Not a big fan, I thought it would be hard for this gawky, stuck-up-but-trying-not-to-show-it actress to carry a film, but the part is written so for her yet totally against type that Katie is able to create an entirely new character separate from Joey Potter and yet oddly reminiscent thereof.
Best about this film (besides the supporting characters) are Gagan's innovations in storytelling and his use of music to add depth to his scenes.

Films rated below five are generally awful even if you like that kind of film - this score is roughly equivalent to one and a half stars from the critics or even less, depending on just how far below five the rating is.
Any film rated C- or better is recommended for fans of that type of film.

The film looks at the Paris Opera as it is terrorized by the Phantom and his obsession with one of the singers.

Abandon moves at a glacial pace which is not justified by the poor character development.
Throughout the film, Katie and Wade remain cardboard-thin, unrealistic types: the intense student who's not nearly as "together" as she seems to be and the alcoholic cop trying to put his life back together.
The film ceases to be boring when she comes on screen, then lapses back into its comatose state when she departs.

Abandon, the directorial debut of Oscar-winning Traffic writer Stephen Gaghan, intends to be as oppressively gloomy as possible, and it succeeds.
The ads for the film are already screaming "Don't give away the ending!" I won't, no worries, but it's worth noting that the twist Gaghan presents isn't much of a conclusion; I was intrigued, assuming the movie would go somewhere with it, but no: the credits roll just as things are getting interesting.
Indeed, the film is an odd combination of patience-testing arthouse drama and schlocky teen thriller (though it does earn points for being set in college rather than high school).

Abandon is a damn good movie despised in some quarters because, he hypothesized, it's not very comforting, because it subverts the entrenched John Landis approach to depicting college life, and because it's determined to be meaningful within the framework of a supernatural pot-boiler.

Holmes' performance on "Dawson's Creek" is less removed from Abandon now than it was at the beginning of the series, when her nose was constantly to the ground and her shoulders were turned so sheepishly inward you worried for the future of her posture.

Abandon is a movie that must have put its studio, Paramount, into such a dither that it had no choice but to embark on an ad campaign that reveals numerous things we should not be aware of upon walking in.

Katie Burke (Katie Holmes) is facing the everyday pressure of an impending graduating college student; a thesis paper to finish, job interviews to go on and the angst that her place in the business world may not really amount to more than just a cog in the wheel.
