  The Abandonware Dilemma
Abandonware is a term used to refer to software that's supposedly been "abandoned" by the manufacturer and is no longer being sold or produced on the market.
From a certain point of view, in fact, abandonware is helpful to companies, as it puts some of their greatest games in the hands of people who've never played them before.
Abandonware might be a fairly low-profile issue but its inevitably going to become higher-profile as the number of great games in the market that people want to play years or even a decade after their release continue to grow.

The Abandonware Debate - Associated Content
As the name might imply, abandonware is software, typically gaming, that was once sold and supported, but has since been "abandoned" by its creator.
Most game companies have simply let their oldest programs become abandonware fodder, neither condoning their distribution nor taking any action to stop the practice, such as producing more copies of contested titles.
The arguments against abandonware are grounded in current copyright law: The game companies have not given away rights to the software, and they have not yet become public domain.

Welcome to the controversial topic known as "abandonware." Coined roughly five years ago, the term simply refers to computer software--like an operating system, application, or game--that is no longer marketed, distributed, or supported by the company that published it.
Abandonware advocates argue that once the software has been discontinued and cannot be easily purchased through retail channels or online stores, it should become public domain.
The abandonware providers claim that companies are not losing any revenue since the software is no longer accessible, so it should be freely distributed for those who want to enjoy it.

G4 - Feature - Abandonware Free For All
I've heard of freeware, shareware, postcardware, and liteware, but the term abandonware is new to me. After a little research on the topic of abandonware I discovered that just because software isn't being sold anymore doesn't mean you can't get a hold of it.
According to most abandonware sites a piece of software can be characterized as abandonware if it meets one of two criteria: Either the company that developed the software has gone out of business and didn't transfer the copyrights to a different organization or individual or the copyright holder has allowed the copyright to expire.
Abandonware can be considered a huge gray area, so be aware of the issues.

Distributors of abandonware define it as software that is at least five years old and is no longer being sold or supported by its publisher.
Despite their efforts, however, abandonware piracy continues to thrive as more and more people take advantage of the abundance of free software.
But, abandonware pirates argue, if publishers are no longer promoting a product, profiting from its sale, or even supporting it, then there's no harm in distributing abandonware.

 Abandonware
Abandonware is software that has been abandoned to the public by its creators and/or original copyright owners and is no longer sold or supported.
Most of this time it is because the platforms the games were developed for are no longer commonly used or even available, the companies themselves may be out of business and the games themselves fell out of favor with a public brainwashed by marketing into pursuing the newest fads and using the latest technology.
Some games require keywords from the original manuals to run so if you threw them or gave them away years ago when the game console finally died instead of storing them in a box in the garage or attic or closet like you should have you're out of luck.

Abandonware websites, named for most consumers' perception that software companies have "abandoned" their oldest software titles, offer free downloads of classic gaming software.
But it is the websites that are attracting the most attention, since they are the most visible and make it very easy to find an old game simply by plugging the name of it into any search engine.
Or, casually browse one of the hundreds of Abandonware websites on the 'net, and you'll eventually find what you're looking for (amongst thousands of other titles, some as old as the PC industry itself).

The Fun! Factory: Games - Abandonware
The ethics of abandonware is a hotly debated issue - some claim that once the publishers will no longer sell a piece of software, and there is no other way of getting hold of it, it is perfectly acceptable to make it available.
On the other hand, the chances are that abandonware is software piracy, and thus illegal in virtually every country throughout the world.
As one of the founders of the Abandonware Ring in 1997 (and the first one to be shut down by the IDSA), I thought I'd offer some corrections and advice:
