Abaye (“Little Father”) was an orphan, and was raised by his uncle, Rabbah bar Nachmani, and his wife.
Abaye lived several hundred years after the destruction of the “Beit HaMikdash,” the Holy Temple, in a period when Temple Sacrifices had long been suspended (pending the arrival of the “Mashiach,” and the rebuilding once again of the Temple).

The machloket (argument) between Abaye and Rava appears to be as follows: Rava reasons that the halachah that states that the second pair of witnesses is accepted to entirely invalidate the first pair is a chidush (a novel halachah), or a "gezerat hakatuv" (a mitzvah for which we are given no reason).
Abaye is of the opinion that we can logically determine that the second pair are telling the truth and therefore says that the edim are passul retroactively.
Abaye merely opines that the halachah is not to act as if we believe the second pair but rather to accept the second testimony as reality and therefore the "edim zomemim" are passul retroactively.

Abaye, who had previously stated that for having hana'a from kilayim one receives malkot even "shelo kederekh hana'ato," since the prohibition is not formulated with an akhila verb, adds that the same is true for basar be-chalav, since there as well the prohibition is not formulated with an akhila verb.
We of course were all taught that the issur hana'a of basar be-chalav is derived from the repetition of "lo tivashel gdi bechaleiv imo," and therefore Abaye's conclusion seems to be obviously true.
Abaye answers that although logically this may be so, the absence of an akhila verb for basar be-chalav is not seen as omission, but as a positive indication that no distinction should be made between kederekh and shelo kederekh.

 Weekly Daf #354
According to the Sage Abaye he will be punished with a sixth set of lashes for violating another prohibition mentioned in the same passages, to refrain "from anything which is made from the grapevine." The Sage Rava disputes this view, because that is an all-inclusive prohibition for which there is no separate lashes.
His reasoning was that if Abaye had not built his position on a tradition received from his teacher, only on his own reasoning, he would have easily retracted from this position in the face of a beraita and conceded to the position of Rava.
It was only when he saw that Abaye was adamant in his position and desperately sought to reconcile it with the language of the beraita that Rabbi Papa finally realized that Abaye's position was indeed based on the solid foundation of tradition.

QUESTION: Abaye gives a list of Tana'im who hold that a Sukah may (or must) be fit to be a "Diras Keva" (a structure built to be a permanent dwelling place).
The answer is that the Gemara (which is no longer Abaye speaking) is citing the proof from our Mishnah only according to Rava -- to show that even Rava holds that Rebbi Yehudah permits a Sukah which is a "Diras Keva," as we see from our Mishnah.
Abaye, though, would have brought the proof from the other sources.
