Ibn Tibbon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the controversy between the Maimonists and the anti-Maimonists Jacob defended science against the attacks of Abba Mari and his party.
He induced his relative Jacob ben Machir ibn Tibbon to support the Maimonidean party by pointing out that the anti-Maimonideans were the opponents of his grandfather Samuel ibn Tibbon and of the son-in-law of the latter, Jacob ben Abba Mari ben Samson ben Anatoli.
Written under the influence of Maimonides, it is of a philosophical and allegorical character, and is similar to that by his brother-in-law Abba Mari ben Simson ben Anatoli, whom he quotes repeatedly.

Even Abba Mari ben Moses of Montpellier and Menahem ha-Meiri of Perpignan, the two eminent southern French scholars who prohibited this therapy in signal Maimonidean locutions regarding the potential connection between astrological practice and worship of the stars, were unable to deny its value.
Rashba argued that efforts to benefit from the inexplicable "special properties" of astrological influences were as potentially productive and legitimate as efforts to employ other mysterious natural forces to human advantage, such as the use in a nautical compass of the magnetic attraction of the lodestone.
In the context of the emerging scientific theory of the early fourteenth century, Abba Mari and Meiri's unbending loyalty to Maimonides' teachings must have seemed particularly rigid and unresponsive to contemporary perceptions.

Acceptance of Maimonides's Thirteen Principles of Faith is not required by halakha, and in fact prominent Jewish authorities both before and after Maimonides have offered a number of different formulations of the principles of Jewish faith.
The successors of Maimonides, from the thirteenth to the fifteeneth century--Nahmanides, Abba Mari ben Moses, Simon ben Zemah, Du ran, Isaac Arama, and Joseph Jaabez--reduced his thirteen articles to three: Belief in G-d; Creation (or revelation); and in providence/retribution.
Others, like Crescas and David ben Samuel Estella, spoke of seven fundmental articles, laying stress on free-will.
