Abbas, for his part, did nothing to dispel this belief, and, in fact, intimated that he would like to be restored to the throne.
Abbas was supposedly an ideal candidate for the part, because his presence on the Syrian throne could be used to exert pressure on the British in both Palestine and Iraq.
It was not until 1931 that Abbas raised the white flag, officially renouncing all claims to the Egyptian throne in exchange for a settlement of his financial affairs and finally contenting himself to become a "former khedive" more than a decade and a half after he was deposed.

Abbas was deposed by the British in 1914 when Turkey, where the khedive was spending the summer that year, signalled its intention to join the Central Powers.
However, while Abbas was not entitled to travel abroad as an Egyptian, an official government source maintained that he was still barred from coming to Egypt by virtue of the laws he had recognised in the document in which he renounced his claims to the throne.
Abbas was not the only one to believe that Fouad's heart would soften at his nephew's need to escort his mother to her final resting place.

 Abbas II - LoveToKnow 1911
Abbas Hilmi Pasha, I. a great-great-grandson of Mehemet Ali, born on the 14th of July 1874, succeeded his father, Tewfik Pasha, as khedive of Egypt on the 8th of January 1892.
He was surrounded by intriguers who were playing a game of their own, and for some time he appeared almost disposed to be as reactionary as his great-uncle Abbas I. But in process of time he learnt to understand the importance of British counsels.
He paid a second visit to England in 1900, during which he frankly acknowledged the great good the British had done in Egypt, and declared himself ready to follow their advice and to co-operate with the British officials administering Egyptian affairs.
