Abbess Roding and Beauchamp Roding (q.v.) form the south-west part of the area known before the Norman Conquest as Roding or Rodings.
Abbess Roding village, in the centre of the ancient parish, is 6 miles north of Chipping Ongar.
In 1842 it was estimated that the parish contained 1,257 acres of arable, 243 acres of meadow and pasture, and 75 acres of woodland.

In April 1540 Abbess Roding was granted by Henry VIII to Thomas Cromwell.
Abbess Hall farm-house is timber-framed and plastered and was probably rebuilt or much altered in the late 17th or early 18th century.
If so, it appears that there was an estate in Abbess Roding which in the 12th century was held by William de Selflege, lord of Shelley (q.v.), as tenant of the Mandevilles and which descended in 1182 to Michael Fitz Oger as the purparty of his wife Sarah, daughter and coheir of William de Selflege.

 ABBESS RODING
Abbess Roding is one of the eight hamlets and villages collectively known as "The Rodings" which lie either side of the River Roding between Great Dunmow and Chipping Ongar.
Its name derives from the Abbess of Barking who was a patron of the Parish Church of St. Edmund and a local landowner in the Middle Ages.
There are several listed buildings in Abbess Roding including:- Abbess Hall Farm (late 16th century house, garden wall, pump, early 16th century granary and late 16th century barn); St. Edmund's Church; the Old Post Office cottages (early 17th century); and Clare House (late 16th century).

The Rodings are a set of small villages in west Essex, broadly south of Great Dunmow, and all lying in the valley of the river Roding.
This church is right next to Leaden Hall which was held by Thomas Aylett until his death in 1607 and seems almost to have acted as a private chapel.
One of the convicts (James) sent to Australia originally came from Abbess Roding, though was living in London by the time he was arrested in the 1830s.

My believe is partly based on the old spelling of Morrell Roding as Morel Roding, plus the fact that Morel is a French surname.
