BBC - South Yorkshire - Entertainment - Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet
Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a steel working site which has been used for iron forging for at least 500 years.
A great deal of work has been carried out here to ensure the stuffy image of museums and industry is well and truly an anachronism; with CD ROMs, an interactive gallery and a particularly innovative audio tour all available to visitors there is a strong sense of the contemporary.
While much of Abbeydale is obviously devoted to kids there are also a number of portfolios which detail both the processes and the people involved in steel making.

Industrial Revolution - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
The Industrial Revolution was the major technological, socioeconomic and cultural change in the late 18th and early 19th century resulting from the replacement of an economy based on manual labor to one dominated by industry and machine manufacture.
The causes of the Industrial Revolution were complex and remain a topic for debate, with some historians seeing the Revolution as an outgrowth of social and institutional changes wrought by the end of feudalism in Great Britain after the English Civil War in the 17th century.
This "second" Industrial Revolution gradually grew to include the chemical industries, petroleum refining and distribution, electrical industries, and, in the twentieth century, the automotive industries, and was marked by a transition of technological leadership from Great Britain to the United States and Germany.

The local brewing industry had similar problems, in that the coal gave off gases that resulted in a smelly, unappetizing beer.
It was later discovered that it was the sulfur content of common coal that led to both the smell and the poor quality iron, cooking it released it to the air.
The crucible steel process remained a relatively expensive technique in both time and fuel, and could not be used in any sort of modern industrial scale, although the strong steels produced were in high demand for specialty products such as cutlery and weapons.

Steel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From the 16th century to the 18th century, most iron was made by a two-stage process involving a blast furnace and finery forge, using charcoal as fuel.
Until these 19th century developments, steel was an expensive commodity and only used for a limited number of purposes where a particularly hard or flexible metal was needed, as in the cutting edges of tools and springs.
Steel is currently the most recycled material in the world, the industry estimates that of new metal produced each year some 42.3% is recycled material.
