Abbeydorney, also known as Odorney or Kyrie Eleison, was founded in 1154 with monks from Monasteranenagh.
In 1227 the abbot of Abbeydorney was deposed for his involvement in the ‘conspiracy of Mellifont’ (1216-28).
In fact the abbot of Abbeydorney remained active for forty years after the initial closures took place and was stopped only in 1577 when he was shot at Lixnaw Castle.

ABBEYDORNEY may have put daylight between themselves and a battling Kenmare side in this AIB County Kerry Senior Hurling first round clash played at Lewis Road, Killarney on Friday evening, but it was only in the final ten minutes that they managed to pull away.
Abbeydorney led 1-9 to 0-7 at the interval but Kenmare had wasted some good scoring opportunities particularly from frees, having to use three different free takers in the first half.
Abbeydorney picked up their game and finished with a flourish scoring seven unanswered points on the trot from Aidan Healy (two), Brian O’Donovan (two), Damien Ryall (two) and Barry Sheehan as they put a rather flattering look on the scoreboard.

It was a real proud day for Abbeydorney who covered themselves in glory, particularly in the second half as they got the upper hand in game that was tough and rugged at times, but the Kerry champions were strong down the middle and got the scores when it mattered most.
Noreen Fealy, a Kerry senior, was the hero for Abbeydorney as she tormented a beleaguered Templemore defence, scoring 1-7 and being involved in most of the good things that happened up front for her side.
The Abbeydorney defence was excellent throughout with Breda Slattery, the former Clare senior, Helena McKenna, last year’s Kerry junior captain, and current senior Catherine Sexton all excellent at various stages against a light weight attack.

Lixnaw and Abbeydorney have negotiated the first round of the 2005 Kerry senior hurling championship.
Though they were short a number of first-team regulars, the North Kerry men still won at a canter, and the closing stages of the match amounted to little more than target practice for the winners.
Abbeydorney will play St Brendan’s at the quarter-final stage, while Crotta and Kenmare are due to meet in a loser’s round game.

Such was the story that occupied the thoughts and tongues of all the gossips from Newtownsands to Abbeydorney, for months and years after.
As the occurrence was in itself quite unique in its kind, even those who pretended to the most intimate communication with the spiritual world, as well as the confessed and best accredited agents of the gentlemen, were wholly unable to offer anything like a probable explanation of it.
One old blind woman, who was, indeed, the Lord knows how old, and was wrinkled and grey in the memory of the baldest inhabitant of Abbeydorney, called to mind a tale that had been told her when a child, which perhaps may be said to give some clue to it.

Avoiding major roads we found ourselves near Abbeydorney, the town where Donal, Kim's old roommate(for those of you who don't know him from Beckett's), is from.
Turns out everyone within 20 miles of Abbeydorney knows who Donal is. The funny thing is, no one outside of that 20 mile radius is even aware of Abbeydorney's existence.
I think, to register on an Irish map, a town needs at least fifteen pubs lined up door-to-door on a main thoroughfare, as that seems to be the design of most other villages we passed through.

This is a result that should not have happen but both Munster Senior League sides, Killarney Celtic and Tralee Dynamos, are struggling domestically.
Celtic should have been able to dispose of the challenge from Abbeydorney A but they just were not up for it and Abbeydorney were more committed.
