George Brunies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
George Clarence Brunies was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 6, 1902 into a very musical family.
Brunies often showed off his unusual technical abilities and bizarre sense of humor at the same time; for example he would lie on the floor and invite the largest person in the audience to sit on his chest while he played trombone.
On the advice of a numerologist, he changed his name to Georg Brunis in the 1960s in the belief that this would increase his good luck.

Paul Mares - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
About 1919 cornetist Abbie Brunies was offered a job playing in Chicago, and passed the offer on to Mares.
(Brunies thought his New Orleans position of doubling driving a taxi-cab and playing music was more secure than prospects in Chicago.)
Mares established himself as a respected band leader over a group of wild and strong willed musicians, as The New Orleans Rhythm Kings (N.O.R.K.) became one of the best regarded bands in Chicago in the early 1920s.

While most of these romping and stomping Brunies were either siblings or the musical parents that created them, this Albert Brunies was a cousin, who came to be known as "Little" Abbie Brunies in order to know who was who, at least off the bandstand.
Most famous among musicians bearing the surname of Brunies was trombonist and bandleader George Brunies, who wound up clipping a couple of letters of his name to become Georg Brunis, a fate that might have befell "Little Abbey" Brunies if he hadn't been so young and short.

Friars Society Orchestra / New Orleans Rhythm Kings
Mares, Brunies, and Roppolo were the core—and the stars—of the band that would gain fame as the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, although the band would go through several changes of personnel.
George Brunies’ family was of German and Belgian stock; the entire family was musical, and brothers Henry, Merritt, Richard, and Albert (Abbie) were all successful musicians and composers.
Brunies remembers that the tune evolved something like this: “… we were playing the ‘Weary Blues’ one night, so all of a sudden Rapp takes a chorus, just playing to himself, man. He didn’t care nothing about the people, he’s high.

Trumpeter Sharkey Bonano leads a group of New Orleans musicians (Jack Delaney [tb] Bujie Centobie [cl] Stanley Mendelson [p] Deacon Loyacano [b] Abbie Brunies [d]) in a program of good ol' good ones that swing non-stop: there isn't a slow one in the batch.
Bonano has a rich, bell-like tone that is at the fore on the lead-ins/out and theme statements, though he doesn't solo and delegates that to the others.
Every time Mendelson solos, drummer Brunies goes to his snare rims with his sticks for a ricky-ticky accompaniment, about as Dixielandish as you can get.

Lewis's clarinet playing never evolved beyond his style of 1919 which in later years would sound increasingly corny, but Lewis certainly knew what good clarinet playing sounded like, for he hired musicians like Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, and (the wonderful and, unfortunately, largely forgotten) Don Murray to play clarinet in his band.
For years his band also included jazz greats Muggsy Spanier on trumpet and George Brunis on trombone.
Ted Lewis's band was second only to the Paul Whiteman in popularity during the 1920s, and arguably played more real jazz with less pretension than Whiteman, especially in his recordings of the late 1920s.
