Abbotsbury is a small village in south west Dorset, England, situated on The Fleet under a steep limestone hill, seven miles north west of Wetmouth and seven miles south west of Dorchester.
Until the dissolution Abbotsbury would have been one of the most important villages in the county, and the settlement is laid out around a wide market area.
The sub-tropical gardens at Abbotsbury were founded in 1765 by the Countess of Ilchester as a kitchen garden for the nearby castle.

Abbotsbury abbey was founded in the second quarter of the eleventh century, by a Dane called Orc (Urkir).
Orc and his wife Tola are said to have given various estates to an older church of St Peter at Abbotsbury; but in 1044 Orc founded the monastery there, introduced monks from Cerne abbey, and secured a charter of confirmation from King Edward the Confessor.
Following the dissolution of Abbotsbury abbey in 1539, its estates and muniments were acquired by Sir Giles Strangways, of Melbury Sampford, Dorset.

The Abbotsbury section runs to 11 two-column pages in smallish print, complete with architectural drawings of the Parish Church, St Catherine's Chapel, the gatehouses, Tithe Barn, plus a map of the village as a key to the listed buildings described in rather less detail.

Abbotsbury Castle is an iron age hill fort in south west Dorset, England, situated on Wears Hill above the village of Abbotsbury, seven miles west of Dorchester and the famous hill fort at Maiden Castle.
The fort was occupied by the Celtic Durotriges tribe and was situated on a high chalk hill overlooking the English Channel, making it the front line of defence from invasion.
There is no evidence that the Romans settled at Abbotsbury Castle as they did at some other hill forts.
