Abbott Handerson Thayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to this theory, "animals are painted by nature darkest on those parts which tend to be most lighted by the sky's light, and vice versa"; and the earth-brown of the upper parts, bathed in sky-light, equals the skylight color of the belly, bathed in earth-yellow and shadow.
One of Thayer's most controversial theories purported that "large-scale protective coloration (or camouflage) had the unique capacity to bewilder and confuse the mind, especially when present in small spaces." For this theory, which he was never able to successfully prove, he drew some criticism amoung his peers.
Thayer declined an invitation to join the Ten American Painters and settled in Dublin, New Hampshire in 1901.

 Abbott Thayer
Thayer's work emerged from the American Renaissance, that late Nineteenth Century backlash against a modern world shaped by science and technology, which found inspiration in the art and culture of the Italian Renaissance and classical Greece and Rome.
Thayer made no attempt to explain his enigmatic figures, saying only that their wings were meant to create "an exalted atmosphere" that lifted them out of the commonplace.
Thayer's early landscapes, such as "Spring Hillside" (circa 1889) were bright, sunlit, apparently spontaneous images, in contrast to the darker brooding views of his later canvases.

Thayer's idealism was influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson's transcendentalist writings and the concept of an ideal world existing beside the material world.
Thayer often created large-scale paintings that served symbolically as "guardian angels." His homage to the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, titled "Stevenson Memorial" (1903), features a pale brooding figure enveloped by darkness, seated on a rock marking Stevenson's grave.
"Thayer was working with the modern notion that the key to understanding his paintings is in the process of their creation, much like the Abstract Expressionist ideas in the 1950s," said Murray.

I just started this thread to give people a bit more chance to read around, and discuss, as Thayer is perhaps a little less familiar than most of our other MOM choices.

I know this all seems a little off-topic to Thayer, but with regards to all these masterpieces, "versatility" of a color/brand, becomes most relevant.
It's interesting when you see the photograph closeup - that vase is really quite rough and abstract and those blue/white blobs of almost pure pigment don't make an awful lot of sense until you see it at a distant.
