An abcess, about the size of a small pea, appears between the tooth being treated for a broken filing and the tooth directly behind it at the exact spot where novicane was administered; approximately 12 hours after the novicane was administered.
I was told it was an abcess and my options were either a root canal or an extraction.
The dentist suggested tooth extraction and she was able to extract the tooh with ease and clean the infected socket.

An equine abcess is a place of concentrated bacterial infection in the body of the horse.
Anbiotics are not very effective at treating abcesses until they are drained because they cannot penetrate the wall of the abcess that does not have a blood supply.
When abcesses are in places like the lungs they may take a long time to clear up and will recur because the infection becomes walled off but not totally irradicated.

Currently, I have been dealing with an abcess that keeps coming back...was treated with soaking, draining, and antibiotics but, when he went off meds it came back so I figured that there must be a pocket or channel that keeps sealing off or the culprit is still in the hoof.
Back to the abcess, my vet found the culprit (sand and yuck) in the sole so he cleaned that out but had to go pretty deep...lots of unhealthy tissue in there that had to go.
From what I understand, abcesses start with something entering at the white line and in my horses case he has thin soles so I wanted your opinion on how to prevent this.

The reason we felt so sure that this was an abcess and not a tumour was that Bulan actually had bite marks on it, and that that it appeared right after she had this bite from another piggy.
So what is thought to be an abcess might sometimes in fact be a tumour, but tumours are not common in guinea pigs.
I have noticed people saying that abcesses in guinea pigs can't be drained like one on dog or cat and that in cavies the abscesses form a "skin" around them, the whole thing can be taken out as a single package by a vet.

It is my belief that these external abcesses can be located in areas which may be very dangerous to the goat if an attempt is made to remove the abcess without bursting.

The good part of abcesses is that they help prevent the bacterias from spreading to other parts of the body, or blood, and can help prevent septic poisoning.

My usual farrier said it was an abcess that blew and to leave it open.
I asked another farrier to take a look at it (he was trimming another horse that day) and he said it was a quarter crack and promptly shaved a chunk out of the hoof (more like sliced it) leaving an even bigger opening.
It is conceivable that a quarter crack could develop from an abcess, but again, there would be a vertical crack.
