Abciximab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Abciximab is made from the Fab fragments of an immunoglobulin that targets the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor on the platelet membrane.
Abciximab is indicated for use in individuals undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (angioplasty with or without stent placement).
Abciximab has a plasma half life of about ten minutes, with a second phase half life of about 30 minutes.

Abciximab   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Abciximab (c7E3) is a chimeric mouse-human monoclonal antibody directed against the GP IIb/IIIa receptor; its mechanism of action is thought to be steric hindrance of the receptor itself as opposed to direct binding to the RGD binding site of the receptor.
Administration of abciximab has become widespread clinical practice during angioplasty in patients with a history of unstable angina, where there is visible thrombus or when an acute ischemic complication (dissection, closure) threatens the success of an elective angioplasty.
Abciximab was the first GP IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitor and has the greatest wealth of clinical data.

Diabetics Undergoing Angioplasty Benefit From Antiplatelet Drug Reopro (Abciximab)
While patients treated with abciximab and angioplasty experienced sustained benefits after six months (51 percent reduction, compared with stents alone), these benefits were reduced at one year and are attributed to the lack of stent placement (9 percent reduction in death after one year, compared with patients treated with stent alone).
Abciximab is currently being studied in combination with thrombolytic agents in order to find an optimal regimen that would assist with thrombolysis (the break-up of a blood clot).
Abciximab - the first of a new class of drugs called glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa inhibitors - reduces the complications associated with angioplasty, a common procedure used to treat patients with cardiovascular disease, by preventing the formation of blood clots that commonly intensify during the procedure.

Abciximab (ab-SIKS-ih-mab) is used to lessen the chance of heart attack in people who need percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), a procedure to open blocked arteries of the heart.
Abciximab is used with aspirin and heparin, which are other medicines used to keep your blood from clotting.
Also, tell your doctor if you have received abciximab or heparin before and had a reaction to either of them called thrombocytopenia (a low platelet count in the blood), or if new blood clots formed while you were receiving the medicine.

Due to the fact that a concentration of abciximab of 0,175 μg/mL is considered as maximal plasma level (MPL) after systemic infusion [18], the present data demonstrate that direct anti-migratory effects of abciximab may not contribute to the anti-restenotic effects described in experimental [33-39] and clinical [1,2,5-7] studies.

Superior In-Hospital and 30-Day Outcomes with Abciximab
The benefit associated with the use of abciximab was consistent for all high-risk subgroups analyzed and especially pronounced among diabetic and female patients.
For example, although abciximab binds more tightly to the GP IIb/IIIa receptor than eptifibatide, there is evidence for greater antiplatelet effect with eptifibatide, especially at the end of the infusion period and at pre-hospital discharge.
Abciximab is shown to favorably alter the PCI-related inflammatory activation with the ability to reduce the rise in CRP (-32%), interleukin-6 (-76%) and tumor necrosis factor-a (-100%), as well as block neutrophil and monocyte activation compared with placebo.
