The Detroit-based vocal group - consisting of lead vocalist Levi Stubbs, first tenor Abdul "Duke" Fakir, second tenor Lawrence Payton and baritone Renaldo "Obie" Benson - began singing together as the Four Aims soon after graduating high school in 1954.
Periodically, they found themselves back on the charts during the Seventies and Eighties with such hits as "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I Got)" and "When She Was My Girl." After the death of Payton in 1997, the remaining members continue to perform as the Tops.

It was actually 51 years ago, in 1953, that Fakir, Stubbs, Payton and Benson first started singing together as high school students (Fakir and Stubbs at Pershing, Payton and Benson at Northern).
Original Top Renaldo “Obie” Benson is still with the group; Ronnie McNair replaced the late Lawrence Payton, and now former Temptation Theo Peoples fills in for Stubbs on lead vocals.

Born in Detroit in 1936, bass vocalist Benson teamed with Levi Stubbs, Abdul (Duke) Fakir and Lawrence Payton in 1954 to form the Four Tops.
Stubbs left the group in 2000 after suffering some health problems, but Benson, Fakir and two replacement Tops celebrated the group's fiftieth anniversary last year.
The lineup remained intact for forty-three years, until Payton's death in 1997.
