Mustafa Akyol's "A Sultan with Swat" (Dec. 26) ends with the suggestion that we "recover the spirit of Islamic modernity personified by the piano-playing Sufi, Abdul Hamid II." That same Abdul Hamid II was responsible for murdering over 200,000 Christian Armenians between 1894 and 1896, which laid the groundwork for the 1915 Armenian genocide.
My article on Abdul Hamid II intended not to portray him as a completely faultless ruler, but to stress the great dichotomy between this prominent Caliph, which was a modernizer of Islamdom and a friend of the US, and the contemporary self-declared warriors for the Caliphate such as Al Qaeda terrorists.

 Melson. Revolution and Genocide
In the first instance the regime of Abdul Hamid II used massacre against the Armenians not to destroy the community but to restore an old order; in the later genocide the regime of the Committee of Union and Progress used genocide to eliminate the Armenians from the Turkish social structure.
Using Davison's figures, the population of the Ottoman Empire in 1876, when Abdul Hamid came to power, was 38,493,000, of whom Ottoman Turks constituted 13,500,000 or 35 percent, and the Armenians 2,500,000 or 6.5 percent.
Abdul Hamid's attitudes and intentions concerning the massacres may be gauged from a letter sent by the sultan to Sir Philip Currie, the British ambassador, in which he explains why harsh measures had to be taken at Sassoun, the scene of the first massacre in August 1894.

Sultan Abdul Hamid II It was in such conditions as you saw described in the previous part, that in 1876 Sultan Abdul Hamid became king of the empire by the help of Medhat Pasha, who was at the head of the liberal groups.
These groups, which were established by the order of Sultan Abdul Hamid, were called "troops of Hamid" (Afvajeh Hamidiyeh) and they were rare and incomparable in their cruelty and crimes.
The obvious result of this measure was that the Kurds were armed to the extreme, their felonies and crimes were made legal, Armenian lands were taken over and finally, the Armenian population in the region was decreased.

 STRAITS Chapter 1
In the event, the succession of Abdul Hamid II (later to become universally known as Abdul the Damned) was greeted initially with some enthusiasm amongst those usually associated as being friends of Turkey, Disraeli foremost.
The ostensible liberal leanings of Abdul Hamid were soon exposed as he then proceeded instead on a reign of personal despotism and tyranny that would last a generation leaving Salisbury to complain in 1897 that, in the policy of supporting Turkey, Britain had backed ‘the wrong horse’.
He informed his Ambassador in Vienna that disgust at the Sultan had turned public opinion Turcophobe, that Abdul Hamid had run down the fortifications guarding the Straits but that, paradoxically, according to Salisbury’s naval advisers the prospect of forcing the Straits was now a much more difficult operation.

Moreover, although the massacres of 1894 to 1896 are a stain upon the sultan's record, he was not a "butcher," mainly because of his attachment to the Islamic faith.
