The Mercury: Thousands bid farewell to King Fahd [03aug05]
Mourners were led by Fahd's half-brother and successor King Abdullah, de facto ruler for a decade, and powerful Defence Minister Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, the new crown prince of the ultra-conservative Gulf kingdom.
However, both are elderly - Abdullah was born in 1923 and Sultan in 1928 - so Saudi Arabia faces the prospect of having to appoint a new king every few years.
King Fahd, believed to be aged 84 and married five times, died in hospital at dawn on Monday, after 23 years on the throne in which he led the country through oil crises, wars and the deadly menace of Islamic extremism.

This is an agenda for the private sectors of both countries to pursue, but I am confident there is good potential for more Indo-Saudi joint ventures and more Indian investment in Saudi Arabia.
This is so important to us that HRH Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz has offered an encouragement in the way of the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Prize for water, which aims to reward the efforts of innovative scientists, academics and organizations who carry out applied research in the water resources sector worldwide.
We think that the discerning investor knows better than us about the opportunities in Saudi Arabia, and so it’s not our policy to target certain sectors for investment.
