Higgaion: Paul Iversen on the Tel Zayit "abecedary"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The fact that this inscription was facing out is, therefore, not surprising at all and does not indicate that it was done on purpose to display the letters, especially given that the other side of the stone had the concave bowl and was thus unsuitable for the wall's exterior.
His arguments that this inscription is an abecedarium that provides evidence for an alternate official order (I can't understand the claim on the website of a "traditional sequence" since it clearly isn't the traditional order as Tappy pointed out several times) of the letters is also rather rash.
It cannot even be said that this was meant to be an abecedarium in the sense that it was used to display the official order of the letters of the alphabet, since we do not know the purpose of it.

Arranging one's life and opinions as a dictionary may sound like a cockeyed idea, but in Milosz's hands it illuminates much of 20th century literature and history -- and the muddled, tragic no-man's land where they've overlapped.

The Forward Newspaper Online: The ABCs of 'Abecedary'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
"Abecedary," from medieval Latin abecedarium — a word formed from the first four letters of the Roman alphabet —; goes back to the 15th century in English, when it signified a child's alphabet book or primer.
Subsequently, in the 16th century, it took on the additional meaning of "alphabetical." Neither of these meanings survived into modern times, both having become archaic by the 18th century.
This was done by placing a crossbar on the lower cusp of the "C" to create a "G." On the other hand, Latin did not have a "z" sound, and so the seventh letter of the Euboean-Etruscan alphabet, Zeta, was dropped and "G" was inserted in its place.

One of the oldest citations in the OED indicates that, while today honeymoon has a positive meaning, the word was actually a sardonic reference to the inevitable waning of love like a phase of the moon.
