		Although "Abegweit" is the story of the Confederation Bridge, spanning the Northumberland Strait between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, it is also a video with a mission.
		The film shows groups of fishermen talking together and expressing their fears about ice build-up and possible destruction of the lobster, scallop, herring, and haddock fishing grounds, as well as to the Irish moss industry.

		The name Abegweit is the widely known anglicization of Epikwetk, the original word taken from the Míkmaq language for Prince Edward Island.
		The Abegweit First Nation is headquartered on Scotchfort Reserve 4, which is known as Skaqmk and is located on a historic Míkmaq portage route connecting Mimtugaak (on the Hillsborough River near Mount Stewart) to Kadotpichk (Savage Harbour).
		The Abegweit First Nation amalgamated the three reserves in the eastern part of the province in the 1990s.

		The 82nd Abegweit Re-Enactors also portray other Island units which served overseas such as the 2nd Medium (PEI) Battery which served in Italy and the 8th Medium (PEI) Battery which served in North West Europe.
		During summer time, the 82nd Abegweit Re-Enactors portray Islanders who served with The West Nova Scotia Regiment and wear the Khaki Drill uniforms which would have been worn during the Sicilian and Italian campaigns.

		According to legend, the god Glooscap finished painting the beauties of the world and then dipped his brush into a mixture of all the colors and created Abegweit, his favorite island.
		Abegweit was sighted by Jacques Cartier in 1534 and was probably visited frequently by French and Basque fishermen in the 17th century, but Europeans did not settle there permanently until the second decade of the 18th century.
		The island appears under the name Île de Saint Jean in Champlain's narrative (1604) and on his map (1632), but that name is probably of earlier origin.
