  Biography of Abel Dougherty Helman
Helman made a trip to over the mountains to the Willamette Valley, Ore., driving a mule team from Yreka,Cal., to Salem, Ore., on the way crossing a part of the tract that he afterwards took up as a donation claim.
Helman resided in Yreka until January, 1852, when, with two friends from Ashland County, Ohio, he came to what is now Jackson County, Ore., and took up three hundred and twenty acres of land on what was then called Rock Creek.
Helman married for his first wife Martha J. Kanagy, who was born in Pennsylvania, came to Oregon by the Nicaragua route in 1853, and died soon afterwards on the home farm.

Five days later, Abel Helman and his friend Eber Emery, both from Ashland County, Ohio, made their way to the tree lined valley and took up land claims.

The story goes that in 1853 the Chinese cook of Abel Helman, an early Ashland pioneer, planted the first tree of heaven in this region—the very large tree that still guards the entrance to Lithia Park.
This tree originates in China and can endure difficult conditions, such as drought, wind, bad soil, and freeway overpasses, to create beauty where none existed before.
They redeem themselves in the fall, however, when their leaves turn the brightest red of any tree in the northwest forest.
