 The Abencerrages.
The Abencerrages flourished for a time at Cordova; but probably repaired to Granada after the downfall of the Western Caliphat; it was there they attained their historical and romantic celebrity, being foremost among the splendid chivalry which graced the court of the Alhambra.
The Abencerrages stood by the failing fortunes of Muhamed throughout the struggle; their last stand was at Loxa, where their chief, the vizier Yusef Aben Zeragh, fell bravely fighting, and many of their noblest cavaliers were slain: in fact, in that disastrous war the fortunes of the family were nearly wrecked.
The Abencerrages continued intrepid, as they were loyal, in their adherence to the cause of Ayxa and her son Boabdil, throughout the war which ensued, while the Venegas were ever foremost in the ranks of Muley Abul Hassan and El Zagal.

The Alhambra - Granada: Hall of the Abencerrages, spain
OPPOSITE to the Sala de dos Hermanas, is the Sala de los Abencerrages, or Hall of the Abencerrages, so called from the massacre of that illustrious tribe; which is said to have been here perpetrated by Boabdil, the last king of Granada.
The Abencerrages were one of the noblest tribes in that city, and objects of envy to the Zegris and Gomeles, by whom they were falsely accused of treason to the King, and one of them was charged with illicit intercourse with the Queen.
The Hall of the Abencerrages appears to have been a central saloon communicating with the other apartments of the palace.

The story is told that one of the Abencerrages, having fallen in love with a lady of the royal family, was caught in the act of climbing up to her window.
The apartment where this is to have taken place is one of the most beautiful courts of the Alhambra, and is still called the Hall of the Abencerrages.
Many poems and plays, and one opera (Les Abencerrages, by Cherubini) mention the legend, but the whole story is doubtful, because the best historians do not mention it.

There are four fountains under the Gate of justice, as many under the entrance-gate, and another in the Hall of the Abencerrages, without counting the Taza de las Leanes, which, not content with vomiting water through the mouths of its twelve monsters, tosses a jet towards the sky through the mushroom-cap which sur mounts it.
The other Abencerrages would have shared the same fate if it had not been for the devotion of a little page who, at the risk of his own life, ran to warn the sur vivors from entering the fatal court.
I am not sure that I did not see the Abencerrages walking through the moonlit galleries carrying their heads under their arms: anyhow the shadows of the columns always assumed forms that were diabolically suspicious, and the breeze as it passed through the arches made me wonder if it was not a human breath.

Recollections of the Alhambra - Wolfert's Roost and Miscellanies - Washington Irving, Book, etext
In the silent and deserted halls of the Alhambra; surrounded with the insignia of regal sway, and the still vivid, though dilapidated traces of oriental voluptuousness, I was in the strong-hold of Moorish story, and every thing spoke and breathed of the glorious days of Granada, when under the dominion of the crescent.
The veterans of the family, who sat in the royal council, were the foremost to devise those heroic enterprises, which carried dismay into the territories of the Christians; and what the sages of the family devised, the young men of the name were the foremost to execute.
The Abencerrages were her favorite heroes; she felt a woman’s admiration of their gallant courtesy, and high-souled honor; and it was touching and inspiring to hear the praises of that generous but devoted race, chanted in this fated hall of their calamity, by the lips of Spanish beauty.

Plot Summary: Two factions, the Abencerrages (led by Abdelmelech) and the Zegrys (led by Zulema), are fighting for control of Granada.
When a battle breaks out between the two factions within the city walls, Almanzor—an extremely powerful warrior—insisting that he doesn’t have time to decide which side’s cause is best, joins with the Abencerrages because they seem to be at a disadvantage.
He is disarmed and taken prisoner, but when King Boabdelin’s entreaties to the two factions to stop fighting come to no end, Almanzor, by the sheer force of his will and the power of his voice, ends the skirmish.
