As elsewhere, an ageing population puts pressure on health care and pensions but plans to reform work practices, including change or scrapping the retirement age are being considered.
Meurig Lewis thanked her for an interesting talk adding that the Club was fortunate again this year in having scholars who were committed to their ambassadorial role and to their studies.
Club members and guests were privileged to have the former Member of Parliament, barrister and circuit judge, Lord Elystan Morgan as their guest speaker at the evening meeting held on November 30th.

Ian Gulley is one of the founding members of Gwerin Aber Folk who've been organising gigs and open sessions in the Coopers Arms ('Y Cwps') in Aber since 1995.
Over the past year, we have had many well-established Welsh artists such as Cass Meurig, Lyn Denman and Julie Murphy performing at our concerts - but I must emphasise we are also nurturing local talent.
Gwerin Aber Folk's open sessions are held at 8.30pm every Tuesday night in the Coopers Arms, Northgate Street, Aberystwyth.

And Llywelyn came to Aberystwyth and there he built the castle again and gained for himself the cantref of Penweddig and he held it; and the other portion, between the Dyfi and the Aeron, he gave to the sons of Gruffudd.
1237 In this year the Lady of Wales, wife of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth and daughter to the king of England, - her name was Joan - died in Llywelyn's court at Aber; and her body was buried in a consecrated enclosure which was on the shore-bank.
1246 In this year the shield of Wales, Dafydd ap Llywelyn, died in his court at Aber; and his body was buried at Aberconwy with the body of his father.
Sir John Meurig Thomas addressed the gathering and the singing was led by Teifion Thomas.
In January 1998 Dr Tom Little, CBE addressed us on the subject of Food at the Unilever Centre, Colworth House, Bedfordshire, a particularly appropriate venue in which to hold the Roy Pinsent Memorial Lecture since it had been Roy’s place of work.

But on the whole the later idea has more usually been, that the devil is the huntsman, that his dogs give chase in the air, that their quarry consists of the souls of the departed, and that their bark forebodes a death, since they watch for the souls of men about to die.
Soon afterwards I went to the neighbourhood of Aber Soch and Llanengan, where I was lucky enough to find Professor Owen of St. David's College, Lampeter, since appointed Bishop of St. David's, on a visit to his native place.
On the way to Aber Soch I passed by an old-fashioned house which has all the appearance of having once been a place of considerable importance; and on being told that its name is Castellmarch, I began thinking of March ab Meirchion mentioned in the Triads.

There were also possibilities in Australia: he was pressed to join Lloyd Rees' CSIRO Division of Chemical Physics, in Melbourne, and there was correspondence about his going to the ANU in Canberra, with R.L. Martin, or to the Flinders University in Adelaide, with D.J.M. Bevan.
While JS strongly supported Thomas's move, his letters from this period show that it and the subsequent departures of his old friend Mansel Davies and then J.O. Williams (for UMIST) left him feeling isolated scientifically and topographically: he gave graphic descriptions of the difficulty in getting from West Wales to London, especially by public transport.
Eventually, in 1979, perhaps foreseeing the imminent demise of the chemistry department at 'Aber', the Andersons decided to return once again to Australia, where three of their four children (and their grand-children) lived.

Unlike other Celtic nations such as Ireland, Scotland or Brittany, who have a vibrant community based music tradition, Wales is not known for its "ceilidh" culture.
If you say 'traditional Welsh music' to most people, they would not think of highly skilled and talented artists like Cerys Rhys Matthews (pipes), Harriet Earis (harp) or Cass Meurig (crwth).
Essentially what we are trying to build here is a musical culture such as you would find in Ireland or Scotland.
In her later years, however, it was quite useless for a stranger to question her on these things: fairy lore had been so laughed out of countenance in the meantime, that at last she would not own, even to the members of her own family, that she remembered anything about the fairies.
Another instance in point is supplied by the story of Castellmarch, and by my failure for a whole fortnight to elicit from the old flsmith of Aber Soch the legend of March ab Meirchion with horse's ears.
