  Abercynon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Abercynon is a small village in the Cynon Valley, in Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales.
The village developed as a transport interchange being at the junction of the Merthyr and Aberdare branches of the Glamorganshire Canal and the Merthyr and Aberdare branches of the Taff Vale Railway.
Abercynon's rugby league side are called the Valley Cougars and play in the Welsh Conference Premier.

 The Taff Trail - The Route from Cardiff Bay to Brecon
Abercynon is situated on the side of the valley at the junction of the Rivers Cynon and Taff.
Click the picture to see the inscription on the plaque mounted on the rails and stone sleepers of Trevithick's tramway which is a feature of the route north from here.
Navigation House was situated on the Glamorganshire Canal at Abercynon where iron was transferred from the tramway onto barges for onward transhipment to Cardiff Docks.

Abercynon R.F.C. was founded in 1886 around the time that the village of Abercynon began to expand.
The side during this time drew heavily on the miners who worked in the local colliery and the men would very often come staight from working their shift underground and play a match turning up in their coal covered working clothers and faces.
Abercynon R.F.C was reformed after the war in 1948 and such stalwarts as Chester Williams, Jim Davies and many more served this club with great distinction.

The conversion by his brother Matthew Turner put Abercynon into the lead at 13 - 12 but Rumney came back strongly and were awarded the put in at a scrum on the Abercynon twenty two.

At Abercynon, the Trail travels along the route of Richard Trevithick's tramroad, the first ever steam locomotive route.

Cyclists travelling North from Abercynon to Aberfan may continue along the Taff Trail to Quakers Yard.
Alternatively from Abercynon (starting near to the Navigation Inn and Fire Station) pass under the railway bridge then turn right into Glancynon terrace, right into Alexandra Place and left into Lock Street (climbing all the way to the top).

 Trevithick and the Penydarren Tramroad
February 21st 2004 was the 200th anniversary of the first steam-hauled train which ran between Merthyr Tydfil and present-day Abercynon.
The Penydarren locomotive - named after the ironworks where Trevithick was employed - completed the task, hauling some seventy passengers and ten tons of pig iron along the nine mile route on February 21 1804, though its weight destroyed many of the flange plates in the process.
The town of Abercynon is reached by passing under the railway bridge, then following the road to the left of the Indian takeaway to the town centre, where at Abercynon South and North stations trains can be caught back to Merthyr, or to Aberdare and Pontypridd/Cardiff.

 CAPITAL WALK 7: Trevithick Tramway
This walk starts at the Navigation Inn at Abercynon - a building which was at one time the administrative centre for the Glamorganshire canal, remains of which can still be seen on this walk.
It is a short walk from either to the Navigation House.
From the inn proceed past the fire station, where there is a commemorative plaque for Richard Trevithick, and turn right up a lane signposted Tramroadside which follows part of the route of the old tramway from Abercynon to Merthyr Tydfil and along which Trevithick drove his famous steam train.
