The sudden death of Terry Crowley in January 2005 at his home in Hamilton, New Zealand, brought to a sadly premature end the life of one the most committed and productive linguists to have worked on the languages of the South-West Pacific during the last quarter of a century.
He was not only an outstanding describer of, and analytic commentator on, both Bislama (the pidgin-creole complex which is both the lingua franca and the constitutionally designated national language of Vanuatu) and some of the 105 or so Austronesian languages of Vanuatu, but he was also an outstanding teacher of linguistics.
In 1983 he became the founding Director of the Pacific Languages Unit at the University of the South Pacific's Port Vila campus, located in the capital of the then newly (1980) independent Republic of Vanuatu, a post he occupied with distinction until the end of 1990.
