Of the 129 MSPs elected to the Scottish Parliament, 73 are elected to represent first past the post constituencies, whilst the remaining 56 are elected by the additional member system.

North East Scotland is one of the eight electoral regions of the Scottish Parliament which were created in 1999.
Nine of the parliament's 73 first past the post constituencies are sub-divisions of the region and it elects seven of the 56 additional-member Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs).
The constituencies were created in 1999 with the names and boundaries of Westminster constituencies, as existing in at that time.

My constituency includes part of the Glasgow, Govan Scottish parliamentary seat and in 1999 and 2003 the Scottish National party's deputy leader, Nicola Sturgeon, was defeated by Labour's Gordon Jackson, but in 1999 and 2003 she became an MSP.

Scottish Parliament regions should be revised to reflect natural local communities and identity and should be built on local authority areas.

The old Aberdeen North seat had been held by Labour since 1935 and since 1970 had been held by Robert Hughes, who was Scottish Under Secretary of State until 1975 when he resigned over pay policy.
In the event, the result in Aberdeen North in 1997 was almost identical to that in the old Aberdeen North in 1992, give or take a percentage point or two.
For the Scottish election, Labour were obliged to look for a new candidate as Malcolm Savidge, a new boy at Westminster, is not interested in the Scottish parliament.
