Abertzale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Abertzale in the Basque language means roughly, "patriot", and is used to mean "Basque nationalist".
Emakume Abertzale Batza, onetime women's section of the PNV, made illegal by the rebel junta in Burgos during the Spanish Civil War.
The names Ezker Abertzalea (Izquierda Abertzale or "Abertzale Left"), Nafarroako Sozialista Abertzaleak ("Abertzale Socialist of Navarre") and Araba, Bizkai eta Gipuzkoako Sozialista Abertzaleak ("Abertzale Socialists of Álava, Vizcaya, and Guipúzcoa") have been used by various parliamentary groups of Herri Batasuna and Euskal Herritarrok in different parliaments.

But the prisoners themselves in many occasions have said that their liberation would be the consequence of a negotiating process and thus, not to think that the political conflict would be overcome with the release of the prisoners.
Being that independence and socialism are the axes of the Abertzale Left movement, the structures of the movement are the instruments.
The Abertzale Left has a great future; until now we practically have not worked on our political project, because what we are proposing and cultivating is the struggle for the fundamental rights of Euskal Herria.

Euskadi - Basque rights and Spanish democracy
It was about putting Basque autonomy on ice until the conversion of its institutions into an appendix of the central state; reversing the policies of linguistic normalization of Euskera [2] in favour of Castilian; braking the development of Basque national identity, and reducing the Concierto Económico (fiscal sovereignty) to a smokescreen.
The transfer of the political hegemony of the abertzale movement towards bourgeois nationalism is the inevitable consequence of the breaking of the ceasefire.
The abertzale left can and must open a profound reflection on these questions and other similar questions, because it is the precondition for the recovery of the credibility lost and the votes lent to democratic nationalism.

The strategy of the Ajuria Enea Board was to destroy the abertzale left [the pro-independence left] and defeat the sector most unprotected, but I think it failed because the Collective of Basque Political Prisoners has managed to stay firm and, moreover, there have been great examples of firmness.
Ten years have passed and they have not made any progress; the Ajuria Enea Board remains stagnant, althoug it has had some partial victories, at a very high cost, and many times it has had to be rescued, depending on the strategy set by the armed organization ETA.
But there is a danger, because if there is a total decomposition in the bases of CC.OO and UGT, with the centrifugal forces pulling to the right, in the bases of ELA something similar has happened and which has provoked a certain struggle.

Several years ago, in a fierce backlash which led to the persecution and even outlawing of Basque social, cultural and political movements including Batasuna, the whole Abertzale movement was vilified by Spanish politicians and the conservative press precisely for supporting the goal of 'national construction'.
The party observes with satisfaction that 'the Abertzale Left has consolidated a particular political perspective among its rank and file: the Option for a Democratic Solution', and that 'the debate over the [political] framework has begun in Navarre too'.
Proof of this is the fact that 'the PNV has shelved the Ibarretxe Plan and taken the leap forward towards a discourse in terms of negotiating for a solution'.

Behind the Elections in the Basque Country
In this respect, the key to understand the shifting relationship between PNV (and, to a lesser extent, EA) and the abertzale left is the desire on the part of each to keep the other—to use J. Edgar Hoover’s celebrated phrase—inside the tent pissing out rather than outside the tent pissing in.
Of course, it has to remembered as well that in good part what had pushed ETA towards a ‘political’ strategy at this point was the danger of isolation, both with regard to the wider population of Euskadi, and in relation to the danger of a too close relationship between PNV and PSE.
For the abertzale position, independentist insofar as it stresses ‘national construction’ and the ‘Basque ambit of decision-making’, the political mechanism for achieving these goals is today reduced to an assassination campaign directed at Spanish generals and PSOE politicians.

There are also some left-wing nationalist groups seeking Basque independence but clearly disapproving of violent methods, such as Aralar [3] (as of 2005, with a representative in the Basque Parliament, Aintzane Ezenarro) or the Navarran coalition Nafarroa Bai [4] (as of 2005, with a Spanish M.P., Uxue Barkos).
