The strategy of the Ajuria Enea Board was to destroy the abertzale left [the pro-independence left] and defeat the sector most unprotected, but I think it failed because the Collective of Basque Political Prisoners has managed to stay firm and, moreover, there have been great examples of firmness.
Regarding the unity of action among ELA and LAB, it happened that the Spanish unions CC.OO [Workers Commissions] as well as UGT [General Trade Union of Workers] were invading a ground that was damaging Basque syndicalism.
ELA saw the necessity--LAB had already proposed it--of a unity of action of the two abertzale [nationalist] unions to counterarrest the centralism of UGT and CC.OO.

 Basque rights and Spanish democracy
The transfer of the political hegemony of the abertzale movement towards bourgeois nationalism is the inevitable consequence of the breaking of the ceasefire.
The abertzale left can and must open a profound reflection on these questions and other similar questions, because it is the precondition for the recovery of the credibility lost and the votes lent to democratic nationalism.
Despite this, it was not able to win over the critical sector of the abertzale left, and this fact constitutes or should constitute an important factor of analysis when we consider initiatives of recomposition or regeneration of the Basque left.

On the one hand, there are capitalists, who sell the right to remain alive in return for their money (kidnappings, extortions and flmails, etc.) and, on the other, the poor, who have no option and must die by the arms and munitions deriving from the kidnapping of the rich (the victims of terrorism).
Democratic unity against terrorism demands an agreement as regards the supreme value of the life of people and the freedom of citizens.
It also demands that it be recognized that ETA violence does not bury its roots in a political conflict which the democratic system would have been able to resolve, but rather that it obeys the totalitarian, exclusive attitude of those who practise and promote it.

This is fundamentally due to two factors: the attitude of the reformist leaders of the left towards the national question, particularly the PSOE and the PCS (Communist Party of Spain), and the repression of the Spanish bourgeois.
The Abertzale Left has achieved, since the general crisis of capitalism and the exponential growth of unemployment, and the absence of a revolutionary and internationalist class alternative, enormous influence amongst the masses in the Basque Country.
Although the right wing affirms that the ceasefire of ETA is due to the illegalisation of the Abertzale Left, the repressive legislation, and police efficiency, the reality is that the only thing that the repression has achieved has been to feed the conflict for years.
