Scotsman.com Sport - ETA - ETA supporters find safe haven in France as crackdown backfires
Indeed Batasuna hopes it will be able to continue its activities in Spain from its French safe havens, frustrating the Spanish government’s efforts to clamp down on ETA, who have been responsible for the murder of 800 people since their campaign to ‘liberate’ the Basque country from Spanish rule began nearly 30 years ago.
Batasuna is registered as a non-profit association in France, and there is no sign of any move by the French government to restrict its operations.
Batasuna denies that it is part of ETA, but its leaders routinely refuse to condemn ETA killings and sometimes openly express sympathy for the organisation.
