 Aberystwyth Castle
Designed as concentric fortresses, Rhuddlan and Aberystwyth Castles were innovative structures composed of rings of defenses, walls-within-walls, which allowed guards to defend their stronghold from several heights without firing upon their own men.
Of the two castles, Aberystwyth is the most ruined, but in its heyday, the castle was every bit as intimidating and secure as its cousin in NE Wales.
In 1649, the castle became a victim of Oliver Cromwell's ruthless policy of slighting after the English Civil War, during which the garrison sided with the king, Charles I. Most of the stone that once formed the castle's walls was probably pilfered by locals, who took advantage of this manmade quarry.

 ABERYSTWYTH
Good Friday, 1865 is possibly the most significant day in the history of Aberystwyth (irritatingly known as ‘Aber’ by some locals, particularly students); on that day, the town got not only a new pier, but a new railway as well.
All piers are at the mercy of Mother Nature in one way or another, and Aberystwyth is no exception; over the years it has suffered cruelly at the hands of violent storms.
It almost seems a pity that the nearby Istanbul Kebab House is NOT part of the pier, particularly as the whole complex is popular with local students; these confident young pups return week after week, and delight in recording their routine and humdrum experiences in pretentious, affected and deeply depressing web logs.

In the boom period of the 1880's when Aberystwyth had its railway, pier, theatres, lecture halls, public baths and roller skating rink, there were, as has been shown, at least six people who made their living wholly or partially as photographers.
