Abhidhamma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Abhidhamma Pitaka is the third pitaka, or basket, of the Tipitaka (Pali; Sanskrit: Tripitaka), the canon of the Theravada school of Buddhism.
Early Western translators of the Pāli canon found the Abhidhamma Pitaka to be the least interesting of the three sections of the Tipitaka, and as a result this important aspect of Buddhist philosophy was little studied in the West until the later half of the 20th Century.
Within the Theravada tradition, the prominance of the Abhidhamma has varied considerably from country to country, with mainland Southeast Asia placing the least emphasis on the study of the Abhidhamma and Sri Lanka the most.

The main difference between the Sutta and the Abhidhamma Pitakas is that in the Sutta the doctrines are explained in the words of conventional, simple language, but in the Abhidhamma everything is analyzed and explained in purely philosophical terms true in the absolute sense.

Thus the dhamma theory was repeatedly enriched, first by the Abhidhamma commentaries and then by the later exegetical literature and the medieval compendia of Abhidamma, the so-called "little finger manuals" such as the Abhidhammatthasangaha, which in turn gave rise to their own commentaries and sub-commentaries.
What emerges from this Abhidhamma doctrine of dhammas is a critical realism, one which (unlike idealism) recognizes the distinctness of the world from the experiencing subject yet also distinguishes between those types of entities that truly exist independently of the cognitive act and those that owe their being to the act of cognition itself.
The answer to this question is that, according to the Abhidhamma, what we call the three temporal distinctions are not three phases of an absolute time but three conceptual constructs which we superimpose on the incessant flow of the dhammas.

As to the codified Abhidhamma Pitaka, familiarity with all its details is certainly not a general necessity; but if it is studied and knowledge of it is applied in the way briefly indicated in these pages, this will surely richly enhance a true understanding of actuality and aid the work of liberation.
To achieve that, it is necessary, however, that the Abhidhamma teachings, which are extremely condensed in parts, are not merely accepted and transmitted verbally, but that they are carefully examined and contemplated in their philosophical and practical implications.

When one approaches the Abhidhamma treatises in such a spirit and gains some insight into their wide implications and organic unity, one will find that they are attempting nothing less than to articulate a comprehensive vision of the totality of experienced reality, a vision marked by extensiveness of range, systematic completeness, and analytical precision.
Taken in conjunction, the analytical method of the earlier treatises of the Abhidhamma Pitaka and the synthetic method of the Patthana establish the essential unity of the twin philosophical principles of Buddhism, non-self or egolessness (anatta) and dependent arising or conditionality (paticca samuppdda).
Since the full exposition of the Abhidhamma requires three months, only devas and Brahmas could receive it in unbroken continuity, for they alone are capable of remaining in one posture for such a length of time.

But the more important and significant aspect of Nyanaponika’s short book is the manner in which he indicates how we are to read canonical Abhidhamma texts: we have to learn to read the signs and follow the clues hidden in the endless and apparently meaningless repetitions.
What he shows is that imbedded in the seemingly repetitive and uniform treatments of the various arisings of consciousness in Dhs are various features and small variations that when interpreted reveal a deeper, more nuanced understanding than might at first be apparent from a cursory glance at the text.
