  Abhidhamma Pitaka
The Abhidhamma Pitaka is the most important and most interesting of the three containing as it does the profound philosophy of the Buddha's teaching in contrast to the simpler discourses in the Sutta Pitaka.
Whereas the Sutta and Vinaya Pitakas are characterized by their practical teachings regarding the Buddhist path to Awakening, the Abhidhamma Pitaka presents an almost scientific analysis of the underpinnings of that very path.
The Abhidhamma Pitaka has a well-deserved reputation for being dense and difficult reading, yet some find its descriptions of the inner workings of the mind to be useful as an aid to meditation practice.

A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma Introduction only
At the heart of the Abhidhamma philosophy is the Abhidhamma Pitaka, one of the divisions of the Pali Canon recognized by Theravada Buddhism as the authoritative recension of the Buddha's teachings.
In the Theravada tradition the Abhidhamma Pitaka is held in the highest esteem, revered as the crown jewel of the Buddhist scriptures.
In the Abhidhamma Pitaka the suggestion is not simply picked up, but is expanded into an extraordinarily detailed and coherent picture of the functioning of consciousness both in its microscopic immediacy and in its extended continuity from life to life.

Abhidhamma, as the term implies, is the Higher Teaching of the Buddha.
The doctrine enshrined in the Abhidhamma Pitaka deals with absolute truths and facts, and can be tested and verified by personal experience, and not through theories and speculations, which may be accepted and rejected later.
According to Theravada (orthodox Buddhism), the essence, fundamentals and framework of the Abhidhamma are ascribed to the Buddha.

 Overview of the Tipitaka
One who reads the Vinaya Pitaka cannot but be impressed by the democratic constitution of the Sangha, their holding of possessions in common, the exceptionally high moral standard of the Bhikkhus, and the unsurpassed administrative abilities of the Buddha, who anticipated even the present Parliamentary system.
This Pitaka may be compared to a book of prescriptions, since the discourses were expounded on diverse occasions to suit the temperaments of various persons.

 The Abhidhamma Philosophy
The main difference between the Sutta and the Abhidhamma Pitakas is that in the Sutta the doctrines are explained in the words of conventional, simple language, but in the Abhidhamma everything is analyzed and explained in purely philosophical terms true in the absolute sense.
Abhidhamma is highly prized by deep thinking students of Buddhist philosophy but to the average student it seems to be dull and meaningless.
Abhidhamma students who are present here will know the twenty-nine possible types of active conscious states that may take place in the case of puthujjanas, the twelve immoral states, eight moral and nine meditational states.

Abhidharma (Sanskrit; Pāli Abhidhamma) is a category of Buddhist scriptures that attempts to use Buddhist teachings to create a systematic, abstract description of all worldly phenomena.
The Abhidhamma Pitaka is the third pitaka, or basket, of the Tipitaka (Pali; Sanskr Tripitaka), the canon of the Theravada school of Buddhism.
Early Western translators of the Pāli canon found the Abhidhamma Pitaka to be the least interesting of the three sections of the Tipitaka, and as a result this important aspect of Buddhist philosophy was little studied in the West until the later half of the 20th Century.

The Abhidhamma offers an impressive systematisation of the whole of reality as far as it is of concern to man's liberation from passion and suffering, and the way thereto; for it deals with actuality from an exclusively ethical and psychological view-point, and with a definite practical purpose.
As to the codified Abhidhamma Pitaka, familiarity with all its details is certainly not a general necessity; but if it is studied and knowledge of it is applied in the way briefly indicated in these pages, this will surely richly enhance a true understanding of actuality and aid the work of liberation.
Again, the Abhidhamma is like a medicine container with a label giving an exact analysis of the medicine; but the knowledge gained from the Suttas is the medicine itself which alone is able to cure the illness and its symptoms, namely craving rooted in ignorance, and the suffering caused by it./.

 INTRODUCTION TO ABHIDHAMMA/abidama1.htm
The first collection, the Vinaya Pitaka, is the book of discipline, containing the rules of conduct for the bhikkhus and Bhikkhunis - the monks and nuns - and the regulations governing the Sangha, the monastic order.
Thus the Abhidhamma method is described as the nippariyaya-dbammadesana, the literal or unembellished discourse on the Dhamma.
Taken in conjunction, the analytical method of the earlier treatises of the Abhidhamma Pitaka and the synthetic method of the Patthana establish the essential unity of the twin philosophical principles of Buddhism, non-self or egolessness (anatta) and dependent arising or conditionality (paticca samuppdda).

In Abhidhamma philosophy the familiar psycho-physical universe (our world of "trees" and "rocks," "I" and "you") is distilled to its essence: an intricate web of impersonal phenomena and processes unfolding at an inconceivably rapid pace from moment to moment, according to precisely defined natural laws.
Regardless of the Abhidhamma's position on the shelf of Buddhist canonical texts, the astonishing detail with which it methodically constructs a quasi-scientific model of mind (enough, by far, to make a modern systems theorist or cognitive scientist gasp in awe), insures its place in history as a monumental feat of intellectual genius.

Thus in Abhidhamma everything is expressed in terms of khandhas, five aggregates of existence; ayatanas, five sensory organs and mind, and their respective sense objects; dhatu, elements; indriya, faculties; sacca, fundamental truths; and so on.
Thus the Abhidhamma approach covers a wide field of study, consisting of analytical and synthetical methods of investigation, describing and defining minutely the constituent parts of aggregates, classifying them under well-ordered heads and well-arranged systems and finally setting out conditions in which they are related to each other.
Patthana forming the last book of the Abhidhamma brings together all such relationship in a co-ordinated form to show that the dhammas do not exist as isolated entities but they constitute a well ordered system in which the smallest unit conditions the rest of it and is also being conditioned in return.

Traditionally the Abhidhamma pitaka has been ascribed to the Buddha, although scholars maintain that it dates from later periods.
According to tradition the Buddha, on the night of his enlightenment, ascended to a heaven world and recited the whole of the abhidhamma to his mother, in order to make to her the greatest act of generosity, the gift of dhamma.
A similar example of the usefulness of abhidhamma is the way in which it helps develop right concentration, by the reading, for example, of its description of jhana factors or the different attributes of certain states of mind.

The fact that the Abhidhamma is not mentioned in the suttas and that only Dhamma and Vinaya are usually referred to, only proves that at one time the Abhidhamma did not form a separate Pitaka.

Abhidhamma states that there are two main types of conventional usage; the first type is concerned with terms which express things that actually exist in reality and the second type describes things which have no existence in reality.
The first three books of the Abhidhamma investigate the absolute Truth of Dhamma in a planned system of detailed analysis employing such terms as Khandha, Æyatana, Dhætu, Sacca and Indriya.

The Vinaya Pitaka, the first division of the Tipitaka, is the textual framework upon which the monastic community (Sangha) is built.
The Vinaya is thus an indispensible facet and foundation of all the Buddha's teachings, inseparable from the Dhamma, and worthy of study by all followers -- lay and ordained, alike.
The Sutta Pitaka, the second division of the Tipitaka, consists of over 10,000 suttas, or discourses, delivered by the Buddha and his close disciples during the Buddha's forty-five year teaching career, as well as many additional verses by other members of the Sangha.

The tradition holds that the contents of the teachings given in the heavenly realm were related to the monk Śāriputra, who passed them on.

Early Western translators of the Pāli canon found the Abhidhamma Pitaka the least interesting of the three sections of the Tipiṭaka, and as a result this important aspect of Buddhist philosophy was little studied in the West until the latter half of the 20th Century.

In Abhidhamma, dhammas are no longer taught in a conventional terms (sammuti sacca) making references to persons and objects as ‘I’,’ we’, ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘man’, ‘dog’, ‘tree’ etc. Here the dhammas are treated entirely in terms of its ultimate reality (paramattha sacca).
Thus in Abhidhamma, everything is expressed in terms of khandhas, five (5) aggregates of existence; ayatanas, five sensory organs and mind, and their respective sense objects; dhatu, elements; indriya, faculties; sacca, fundamental truths; and so on.
Hence, the Abhidhamma Pitaka is made up of seven (7) massive treatises.
