Those used by the Abhorsen family are used to return the dead to Death, and so Charter Marks appear on both the bells and their handles.
In the novel Abhorsen, Lirael, Mogget, the Disreputable Dog and Prince Sameth encounter Astarael in a strange underground area where the Charter is not present and the border between Life and Death blurs.
In Sabriel, it is stated that it is possible for a skilled necromancer or Abhorsen to ring two bells at once, and acheive an effect different from that of either one rung singly.

Abhorsen is definitely not for those who haven't read Sabriel (the first book) or Lirael (the longer second book) yet.
Abhorsen starts out with a shocking prologue, stopping just short of the ending of an assassination scene where the targets are two recurring characters.

Unfortunately the Abhorsen is dead, and only his 18-year-old daughter, who is unaware of her heritage, stands to inherit the position.
Perhaps the aspect of Lirael and Abhorsen most reminiscent of other books for non-adults is the presence of intelligent animal companions who sometimes serve as comic relief.
Abhorsen has all of the good aspects of the first two books, and yet manages to improve upon them.

The SF Site Featured Review: Across the Wall: A Tale of the Abhorsen and Other Stories
The proof is perhaps in Nix's well known Abhorsen Trilogy (comprised respectively of Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen) an epic fantasy series that was so well-received that marketing-savvy publisher, Eos, released two editions: one in the traditional Young Adult format, and the other in a trade sized and unabridged adult version.
With his fellow countrymen unfamiliar with the workings of magic, it is up to Nicholas to save the day, and what follows is a rousing adventure, with Nicholas pursuing the creature across Ancelestiere, culminating in a harrowing showdown at the edge of the Wall and the return of one of Nix's more beloved characters.
In the end, Across the Wall: A Tale of the Abhorsen and Other Stories is a classic example of the potential of Young Adult fantasy literature, a feat made all the more impressive in that almost all the stories will appeal equally to both teens and adults.
