  Abiathar
17 Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech should be read, with the Syriac, for Ahimelech, the son of Abiathar.
Abiathar was deposed (the sole historical instance of the deposition of a high priest) and banished to his home at Anathoth by Solomon, because he took part in the attempt to raise Adonijah to the throne.
The apparent discrepancy is satisfactorily explained by interpreting the words in Mark as referring to the life-time of Abiathar, and not to the term of his holding the office of high priest.

Abiathar, having become high priest, fled to David, and was thus enabled to inquire of the Lord for him (1 Samuel 23:9; 30:7; 2 Samuel 2:1; 5:19), etc. Abiathar on his part was firmly attached to David.
For this, Abiathar was banished to his native village, Anathoth, in the tribe of Benjamin (Joshua 21:18), and narrowly escaped with his life, which was spared by Solomon only on the strength of his long and faithful service to David his father.

Abiathar served as "a leading priest" after the incident at Nob and after Saul had massacred Ahimelech and all the priests at Nob because of the aid that Ahimelech had given to David.
Abiathar's association with David began, then, because of David's feeling of responsibility for the massacre of Abiathar's family and not because of any special priestly talents that Abiathar was known for.
In all of the references to Abiathar, there is nothing--absolutely nothing--to justify Turkel's claim that Abiathar was known as a "stickler for the law." To the contrary, his life ended in disgrace, and his father Ahimelech was the one who was depicted as a priest with high integrity.

Journal of Heresies: Sorting out the heritage of Zadok and Abiathar
This strongly suggests that Abiathar was nolonger the high priest prior to his banishment to Anathoth, and rightly so since he was essentially retired at least a decade (probably two or three decades) prior.
However a son of Abiathar named Jonathan is mentioned several times elsewhere and it still appears that Abiathar is an important priest in 2 Sam 15:35 and in 2 Sam 20:25, so 2 Sam 8:17 and 1 Chron 24:6 may contain errors.
Another twist to all this is thrown in when one writer states that Abiathar was dismissed "to fulfill the the word of YHVH, which He had spoken concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh." (1 Kings 2:27) This suggests that Abiathar was descended from Eli, yet Eli does not appear in Abiathars genealogy.

Neither Ahimelech nor Abiathar are ever given the title in the OT, though it is clear that Abiathar served as a leading priest (along with Zadok) and Ahimelech may have ranked highly as well.
Unless Abiathar was considered a renegade priest, like Sceva, archiereus should be translated as high priest to be consistent with the rest of the KJV N.T. narrative (excluding the epistles) usage or chief priest in terms of position, not virtue.
Abiathar was very probably not involved with the showbread incident, so mentioning him seems highly inappropriate.

As this position is usually attributed to "Abiathar, son of Achimelech" it is thought that the reading "Achimelech, son of Abiathar" is due to an accidental transposition of the text of Kings, and that this transposition has affected the text of Paralipomenon.
